Stood on a cliff in Kaş and genuinely thought someone had Photoshopped the ocean. The water here makes the Aegean side of Greece look washed out — and there's nobody elbowing you for a photo spot.

There's a specific feeling when you walk into a town and realize nobody is performing for tourists. These places still smell like fresh catch and diesel boats, and the tea costs less than a dollar.

In Greece you pay thirty euros to see ruins behind a rope. In Turkey I literally swam next to a sunken city and climbed through a Roman theater with zero entrance fee and zero other visitors.

Kept pulling over on the D400 highway because every bend revealed another village clinging to a cliff above impossible blue water. My camera roll from one afternoon on this road outnumbers my entire Amalfi Coast trip.

Paying forty euros for a sunbed in Mykonos broke something in me. Then I found Turkish beach spots where the entry was free and the fresh-squeezed orange juice was a dollar.

Stopped planning meals entirely and just pointed at whatever the fisherman next to me was grilling. Every harbor town had a version of this and every single one was better than the last.

Every overpriced catamaran tour I did in Greece left me sunburnt and underwhelmed. Turkey's day trips cost a fraction and somehow packed in twice the stops without feeling rushed.

Paid ninety euros a night for a cave hotel with a pool in Turkey. The equivalent in Santorini would have been four hundred minimum — and probably had worse breakfast.

Greek island shopping gave me overpriced evil eye keychains. Turkish coastal town markets gave me hand-loomed textiles, spices I still cook with, and copper pieces I actually display in my apartment.

Said it and meant it — watched the sun drop behind a Lycian tomb from a rooftop in Kaş and realized I'd been overpaying for sunsets my entire adult life. These spots don't require a reservation or a fifty-euro minimum spend.
