Gear I Wish I Had My First Stanley Park Seawall Walk

Purple Star emoji 25 items
That 10km loop around Stanley Park looks easy until you're halfway through with blisters, a dead phone, and rain that showed up out of nowhere. If you're planning your first seawall walk in Vancouver BC and don't want to learn everything the hard way...

Layers and Clothing for Vancouver's Mood Swings

Started the seawall in sunshine, got absolutely soaked by Third Beach. Vancouver weather flips on you mid-walk and cotton is your enemy out there.

Keep this stuffed in your pack even if the sky looks perfect. I got caught near Siwash Rock in sideways rain and watched tourists in hoodies just suffer. Packs down small enough to forget it's there until you desperately need it.

Wear this under everything. I made the mistake of wearing a regular cotton tee and was clammy and cold by the Lions Gate Bridge viewpoint. Merino keeps you warm even when damp, which in Vancouver means always.

Toss these on for the sunny stretches between Brockton Point and the totem poles. Sunburn sneaks up on you when there's a breeze off the water. Way easier than reapplying sunscreen every 40 minutes.

Swap out your regular socks before you go. My first walk I wore ankle socks and had raw heels by Second Beach. These have a lifetime warranty too, so if they ever wear out you just send them back.

Zip the legs off when the sun comes out, zip them back on when the wind picks up near Prospect Point. For anyone who hates choosing between shorts and pants, these solve that argument permanently.

Footwear That Survives the Whole Loop

The seawall is mostly paved but there are wet sections, uneven patches near the rocks, and a few spots where puddles just live permanently. Regular sneakers had me sliding around.

Grab these if you want grip on those slippery sections near the seawall's north side. Regular running shoes had me skating on wet pavement. The cushion also saved my knees on the longer stretches past Lumberman's Arch.

Use these if rain is in the forecast, which statistically it always is. Walked through three puddles near Ferguson Point and my feet stayed completely dry. Heavier than trail runners but worth it for a soggy day.

Slip these into whatever shoes you pick. The seawall is flat but 10km on pavement without arch support had my feet aching for two days after. Wish someone had told me this before walk number one.

Perfect if you plan to detour off the seawall into the forest trails. I wandered up toward Beaver Lake after the main loop and these handled the mud without hesitation. Also look decent enough for lunch after.

Toss these in your bag for after the walk. Switching out of sweaty shoes at a patio table near Denman Street felt like a religious experience. Light enough that carrying them is barely noticeable.

Packing the Right Bag and Accessories

Carried too much my first time, not enough the second. Third attempt I finally nailed the loadout. Here's what actually earned its weight.

Bring this instead of a tote bag. Chest strap keeps it from bouncing, and the mesh back panel means your shirt isn't soaked with sweat by the halfway point. Fits a jacket, water bottle, and snacks without looking like you're going backpacking.
Daylite

Fill this up at the water fountains near Lumberman's Arch and Second Beach. I ran out of water once near Prospect Point and there's a long dry stretch there. Wide mouth means you can actually refill it fast.

Stick this on the back of your phone. I was taking photos nonstop at the totem poles and my battery died before I even reached Lions Gate Bridge. Small enough to forget about until your phone hits 10%.

Throw your phone and wallet in this when the rain starts. Watched someone's phone get soaked near Third Beach and their screen was glitching the rest of the day. Weighs basically nothing and folds into your pocket.
Ultra-Sil Dry Bag Set

Use it as a headband when you're warm, pull it up as a neck gaiter when the wind hits at Prospect Point. One piece of fabric that replaces three things you'd otherwise forget to pack.

Food Stops Worth Planning Around

Packing snacks is fine but honestly the food spots along and near the seawall are half the reason to do the walk. Time your loop so you hit these when you're hungry.

Stop here right at the top of the hill for fish and chips with a view of the Lions Gate Bridge. I almost skipped it because I thought it'd be overpriced tourist food. It kind of is, but sitting there watching container ships pass underneath the bridg...
Prospect Point

Treat yourself here if you want a real sit-down meal near Third Beach. The patio overlooks English Bay and the sunset timing is perfect if you start your walk around 3pm. Not cheap, but splitting the seafood platter with someone makes it reasonable.

Grab a cheese bun right after you finish the loop. Sounds boring but after 10km of walking, warm bread hits differently. It's two blocks from the park entrance and they're usually fresh out of the oven in the afternoon.

Duck in here for a flat white before or after your walk. Better coffee than the park concessions by a mile. The line moves fast and you can take it to go if you're starting the seawall from the Denman Street entrance.
JJ Bean Coffee Roasters

Swing by after the walk for a terimayo dog. Sounds weird, tastes incredible. It's a short walk from the Coal Harbour end of the seawall and there's usually a line, which honestly is how you know.

Viewpoints and Stops You Should Not Rush Past

First time I speed-walked the whole thing trying to finish fast. Second time I actually stopped and realized the best parts aren't at the finish line.

Get here early if you want photos without 40 people in the background. I showed up at 11am on a Saturday and it was packed. Weekday mornings around 8am, you might have the whole area to yourself for five solid minutes.
Brockton Point

Pause here even if your legs are tired. That single rock pillar sticking out of the water is millions of years old and looks completely different depending on the tide. Low tide is the better photo, so check the tide chart before you go.

Sit down on the logs and just breathe for ten minutes. This stretch is quieter than Second Beach, fewer crowds, more locals. Brought a thermos of coffee here once and it was the most peaceful 20 minutes of my entire trip.

Stand right underneath and feel the bridge vibrate when trucks pass overhead. Photos don't capture how massive this thing is in person. The north side of the seawall gives you the best angle, right before the path curves uphill.

Skip the pool itself unless you're there in July or August, but the grassy area next to it is perfect for stretching out after the walk. Locals bring blankets and snacks here on weekday evenings. Feels less touristy than the rest of the park.
