My first visit I just showed up and wandered around like a lost tourist for two hours. Booking the right tour ahead of time changed everything — I actually understood what I was looking at.

Every restaurant facing the Hill charged double for mediocre poutine. It took me three meals of disappointment before I found spots locals actually go to.

Nobody warned me that Ottawa can swing 15 degrees in a single afternoon. I packed for one season and lived in the gift shop buying overpriced hoodies.

Parliament Hill and ByWard Market are basically neighbors but I didn't realize that until day two. Could've saved myself a cab fare and a lot of aimless wandering.

Everyone takes the same photo from the front lawn. Meanwhile, some of the best angles are across the river or from spots you'd walk right past.

Rainy day hit us on day three and I panicked until I realized Ottawa packs more museums per square mile than almost anywhere I've visited.

Rented a car my first trip and spent more time parking than sightseeing. Everything near Parliament Hill is walkable or a cheap ride away.

Spent my whole first trip inside city limits and kicked myself later when I found out what was just 30 minutes away.

Small details nearly derailed my trip — wrong adapter, wrong currency assumptions, wrong expectations about Sunday hours. Learn from my mistakes.
