Standing in a two-hour line in August heat after sleeping in a sweat box apartment was not happening. These got me inside fast and with guides who actually knew their stuff.

My apartment had paper-thin walls and a neighbor who played accordion at midnight, so I was already awake at dawn. Might as well beat the Vatican crowds.

The listing promised a ‘fully equipped kitchen’ — I got a hot plate with one working burner and a fork. These food tours became my actual meal plan.

By day three I couldn't look at those mysterious ceiling stains anymore. These day trips got me out of the apartment and showed me parts of Italy I hadn't planned on seeing.

After booking that apartment based on a misleading listing, I stopped trusting the internet and started trusting local guides who actually live in the city.

Night two I tried making scrambled eggs on that one working burner and set off a smoke detector that didn't stop for twenty minutes. These cooking classes were my redemption arc.

Coming back to that apartment every night required coping mechanisms. Wine tastings in beautiful Roman cellars turned out to be exactly the right prescription.

The two blocks around my apartment were pure tourist chaos — overpriced restaurants, selfie sticks everywhere, and accordion guy. These got me into real neighborhoods.

When your apartment has no comfortable seating and smells faintly of something you can't identify, museums become your living room. These passes got me in fast.

Dragging luggage through Rome's cobblestones to my terrible apartment while lost was the low point. Pre-booking transfers would have saved my dignity and my suitcase wheels.

The best revenge against a bad rental is having such an incredible time outside of it that you barely spend any waking hours there. These made sure of that.
