I Drove the Icefields Parkway and These Stops Blew My Mind

Purple Star emoji 24 items
Planning the Jasper to Banff drive but overwhelmed by how many pulloffs, lakes, and hikes there are? I spent five days on the Icefields Parkway and figured out which stops are actually worth your time versus which ones every blog hypes up for no reas...

Lakes Worth Pulling Over For on the Icefields Parkway

Every lake along this highway is technically beautiful, but some will have you standing there speechless while others are just. fine. These three had me forgetting to breathe.

Get here before 9am or you'll be fighting fifty tour buses for a spot. Showed up at sunrise and had the whole overlook to myself. That wolf-head shape in the turquoise water is even wilder in person than the photos suggest.

Pull into the parking lot right off the highway. No long hike required, which is perfect if you're the type who wants jaw-dropping scenery without breaking a sweat. Brought a camp chair and just sat there for an hour watching the glacier reflection.

Toss this on your list because almost everyone drives right past it. Stopped here on a whim and the water was so still it looked photoshopped. Fewer crowds than Peyto, better picnic spot, and the mountain backdrop goes on forever.

Short Hikes That Deliver Without Destroying Your Legs

Not every hike along the Parkway needs to be a 12-mile death march. These gave me the wow factor without needing a knee replacement afterward.

Bring layers because the wind at the top will cut right through you. About 4 hours round trip and the views of the Columbia Icefield from above are something you literally cannot get from the road. Worth every step.

Switch into your hiking boots for this one. It's only about 5km round trip but you end up staring directly at the Saskatchewan Glacier. Went in late August and there were still wildflowers everywhere. My non-hiker partner loved it.

Grab your camera and walk fifteen minutes downhill to a canyon that looks like water took a thousand years to carve a marble sculpture. Quick, easy, and wildly photogenic. Just watch your footing on the wet rocks near the edge.

Glacier Experiences You Can't Skip

Seeing glaciers from the road is one thing. Getting close enough to hear the meltwater is completely different and honestly a little unsettling in the best way.

Use the big Ice Explorer bus to drive right onto the Athabasca Glacier. Yeah it's touristy. Yeah the tickets aren't cheap. But standing on ancient ice that's hundreds of feet thick while it melts around you is something I still think about months lat...

Try this if you're not terrified of heights. A glass-floored platform hanging over the Sunwapta Valley. My palms were sweating the entire time but the views down the valley are ridiculous. Combo tickets with the glacier tour save you some cash.

Walk right up to the glacier's edge for free if you don't want to pay for the bus tour. Follow the marked path and you'll see how far the glacier has retreated over decades. Sobering and beautiful at the same time. Wear grippy shoes.

Waterfalls That Actually Impressed Me

I've seen a lot of waterfalls that look better on Instagram than in real life. These three genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

Pair this with a morning coffee from Jasper and make it your first stop heading south. The sheer force of water blasting through that narrow canyon is violent in the most beautiful way. Wheelchair accessible paths make it easy for everyone.

Keep driving past the upper falls and take the short trail to the lower falls. Way fewer people and honestly more dramatic. The mist coming off the water soaked my jacket in minutes. Felt like standing inside a nature documentary.

Snag a photo right from your car window if you're lazy about it, or walk thirty seconds to the base. It's a roadside waterfall that has no business being this pretty. Caught a rainbow in the spray around midday.

Where to Eat Between Jasper and Banff

Food options along the actual Parkway are basically nonexistent, so planning ahead saved me from surviving on granola bars for two days.

Keep your expectations in check because it's the only food stop on the middle stretch of the Parkway. Grabbed a burger and hot soup here on a rainy afternoon and it honestly hit different after six hours of driving and hiking. Not gourmet, but necess...

Swing by before you start the drive south. Their cinnamon buns are the size of your head and the coffee is strong enough to keep you alert through mountain passes. Get there early because the line gets long fast.
Bear's Paw Bakery

Toss this into your plan for when you roll into Banff exhausted and starving. Fresh sandwiches, pastries that melt in your mouth, and a vibe that feels like a reward after days on the road. The artisan bread alone is worth the stop.

Best Places to Sleep Along the Drive

Trying to do Jasper to Banff in one shot means you miss half the good stuff. Splitting it up changed my whole experience.

Swap your hotel expectations for something rustic and you'll love this. No electricity, propane lamps, a wood stove. Fell asleep listening to absolute silence for the first time in years. Book months ahead because it fills up fast in summer.

Grab a room here if you want to wake up to one of the most photographed lakes in the Rockies right outside your window. The historic red-roofed lodge has been here since the 1930s. Feels like stepping back in time.

Use this as your base the night before starting the Parkway. Clean, affordable, walking distance to restaurants and gear shops. Met some great people in the common room who gave me trail tips I never would have found online.

Gear That Saved Me on the Icefields Parkway

Weather changes every twenty minutes along this highway. One moment it's sunny, the next it's sideways rain. Packing smart made the difference between misery and magic.

Wore this every single day of the trip. Rain, wind, surprise hailstorm near the Columbia Icefield. Stayed completely dry while people around me in cotton hoodies looked like they regretted every life choice. Worth the price if you do any mountain tra...

Keep this filled because there's no convenience store for long stretches. The glacier-fed streams looked tempting but I played it safe. Water stayed cold for the entire drive even sitting in a hot car. Clipped it to my pack on every hike.

Ditch the sneakers before you go. Trails were muddy, rocky, and slippery near every waterfall. These kept my ankles stable and my feet dry through all of it. Broke them in for two weeks before the trip, which I'd strongly recommend doing.

Photography Tips and Spots I Wish Someone Told Me About

Spent my first day shooting at the wrong times and wrong angles. By day three I finally figured out where the real shots were hiding.

Park at the pulloff and look back north toward the sweeping curve of the highway with mountains stacked behind it. This is the classic Icefields Parkway postcard shot. Golden hour light around 7pm in summer made everything glow like a painting.
Big Bend

Stop here when most people blow right past it. The convergence of three river valleys creates this massive panorama that's almost too wide for a phone camera. Brought a wide-angle lens and still couldn't capture the full scale.

Scope out this roadside pulloff between Jasper and the Columbia Icefield. A thin waterfall drapes down the rock face across the valley. Most people don't notice it, but with a zoom lens or binoculars it's one of the most delicate things I saw on the ...
