My hips were always the first thing to complain. Turns out most cheap cushions flatten out in a week and you're basically sitting on the floor again. These hold their shape and tilt your pelvis forward just enough to take the strain off.

A cushion alone wasn't enough for me. My ankles and knees pressed straight into hardwood and I'd lose feeling in my feet by minute ten. Adding a zabuton underneath changed everything overnight.

Some mornings my knees just refuse to cooperate. A bench lets you kneel instead of cross your legs, and honestly it was a revelation. No more pins and needles in my feet.

Around the twenty minute mark, my lower back would start screaming. I tried just sitting up straighter but willpower alone wasn't cutting it. These give your spine a little backup so you can focus on breathing instead of pain.

Nobody warned me how cold you get just sitting motionless for twenty minutes. Even in a heated room, my shoulders would tense up and I'd spend the whole session shivering instead of breathing.

I used to fumble with my phone timer and get distracted by notifications before I even closed my eyes. Removing the phone from the equation made my practice actually stick for the first time.
