Before Dubai I thought a $40 brunch with bottomless prosecco was fancy. Then I walked into one of these and realized I'd been playing in the minor leagues my entire adult life.

I almost skipped the desert because I assumed it was a cheesy tourist thing. Biggest near-mistake of the whole trip — sand dunes at sunset hit different when you're actually there.

Dubai does rooftops the way other cities do ground-floor bars. Every single one felt like stepping into someone's fantasy penthouse party, except the drinks cost roughly the same as my car payment.

Between the fancy brunches I stumbled into neighborhoods where a $3 shawarma absolutely demolished a $25 wrap I had the day before. Dubai's cheap food scene is criminally undertalked about.

I threw a pool party once with a Bluetooth speaker and a cooler of White Claw and thought it was peak living. Then Dubai showed me what a real beach day looks like and I haven't recovered.

Walked into the souks thinking I was a tough negotiator. Left with saffron I probably overpaid for and a gold bracelet I definitely overpaid for. Still loved every second of it.

Between the glitz I needed reminders that Dubai has real history and soul. These spots grounded me and honestly made the whole trip feel more meaningful than just eating and spending.

Half my food went cold because I kept looking at the view instead of eating. Dubai puts restaurants next to water the way other cities put them next to parking lots.

After four days of malls and brunches my brain needed a reset. Getting out of the city even for a few hours reminded me there's a whole country beyond the skyline.

Checked into my first Dubai hotel and the bathroom was bigger than my apartment bedroom. Checked out five days later with standards so high that every Holiday Inn now personally offends me.

Half of these weren't even on my original itinerary — stumbled into them on recommendations from hotel staff and random people at bars. Sometimes the unplanned stuff hits hardest.
