As a veteran teacher of 26 years, I have collected a ariety of books as read aloud favorites. Here is a list of books that I have shared outloud with my 4th grade classes over the years.
One of my all time favorite read aloud books. It's a story that shows how even with our differences, we can still be a contributing factor in our world. So many great life lessons for students.

Fish in a Tree is a story about a girl who flies under the radar in school. She has dyslexia but no one realizes it until one teacher sees her and helps her understand her potential.
Fish in a Tree: Mullaly Hunt, Lynda - Books
The main character robot gets stranded on an island and has to find ways to survive. He makes friends with the animals and they have lots of adventures. Great lesson about not judging based on outward appearances.
The Wild Robot (Volume 1) - Peter Brown
An unforgettable story of a gorilla who lives in a mall zoo. It is a story told in the first person of Ivan, the gorilla. He makes friends with the humans as well as other animals in the zoo. Friendship is the main theme of the story.
The One and Only Ivan: Newbery Award Winner
The main character Auggie was born with facial differences that have hindered him from going to a mainstream school. He starts at a new school in 5th grade and all he wants to do is to fit in and be accepted. The story is written from Auggies perspective as well as classmates, his sister, her boyfriend and others. A greatlesson in empathy.

Mia has a lot of secrets she doesn't want people to know about. Mia manages a motel's front desk while her Chinese immigrant parents clean the motel rooms. She finds that her writing has power to fight injustice. This book has important lessons about tolerance and immigration in America.
