Best Lakes to Swim
The warmest lake water close to the city and a real sandy beach. Get there before 10am on weekends or the lot closes and they turn cars away.
White Pine Beach, Sasamat Lake
A gorgeous reservoir with a big main beach and a quieter north beach if you hike in. Free, but arrive early on hot days.
Buntzen Lake
A huge lake in Golden Ears with shallow warm areas for kids and canoe rentals on site. Worth the drive for the mountain backdrop.
Alouette Lake, Golden Ears
A warm lake ringed by mountains near Chilliwack, with multiple beaches and a waterpark nearby. A classic full day summer trip.
Cultus Lake
Two swimmable beaches with floating platforms and paddleboard rentals. An easy stop on the way to Squamish or Whistler.
Alice Lake, Squamish
A lifeguarded sandy beach and swimming raft right in East Van. The no drive option when you just need water after work.
Trout Lake
Paddle & SUP
Rent a kayak or SUP and paddle toward the Quarry Rock views. Book a morning slot, it gets busy and windy by afternoon.
Deep Cove Kayak
Kayak and SUP rentals right on Granville Island with calm water and skyline views. Perfect for first timers and kids.
Ecomarine, Granville Island
Flat morning water and rentals nearby make this the easy west side paddle. Gorgeous at golden hour.
Jericho Beach
Paddle a gentle creek to a waterfall for a proper adventure day. Rent canoes at the Grant Narrows dock and go on the incoming tide.
Widgeon Creek Canoe, Pitt Meadows
Pools & Splash
The longest pool in Canada, saltwater, right on the ocean. Sunset laps here are a Vancouver summer rite of passage.
Kitsilano Pool
A big heated pool with a slide, steps from the seawall. The easy win with little kids who are not lake ready yet.
Second Beach Pool, Stanley Park
One of the biggest free water parks in North America, right by the Kids Market. Bring towels and plan to stay for hours.
Granville Island Water Park
An indoor wave pool and slides for the too hot or too rainy days. The backup that never disappoints.
Watermania, Richmond
On-the-Water Day Trips
A 20 minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay to an island of beaches and easy kayaking. The closest thing to a vacation you can do in a day.
Bowen Island
Orcas and humpbacks a few hours out of the harbour. Splurgey, but a genuine bucket list morning. Book a calmer mid morning departure.
Whale Watching
A warm lake, a long sandy beach and hot spring pools about 90 minutes out. A perfect overnight when you want water plus a soak.
Harrison Hot Springs
Big dam views and easy trails down to the river. A free, quick nature and water hit on the North Shore.
Capilano Lake & Cleveland Dam
Gear You Will Want
Keeps phones and towels dry in the canoe or at the beach. The one thing you always wish you had packed.
Waterproof Dry Bag
Rocky lake bottoms and hot docks are no match. Grab a pair for everyone, they live in the car all summer.
Water Shoes
A properly fitted PFD is non negotiable on any boat or dock. Size by weight, not by age.
Kids Life Jacket (PFD)
Pack down tiny, dry fast, and there is always one in the bag. Beach days made lighter.
Quick-Dry Towels
Cold drinks and snacks keep everyone at the lake an hour longer. A soft cooler is easiest to haul down to the sand.
Soft Cooler
Better for the lakes and the ocean, and gentler on little skin. Reapply more than you think you need to.
