While you are most likely to be using a laptop a lot of the time, some professors don't allow you to use them during class and some people do better with hand writing, so of course notebooks will be needed.

A hamper will obviously be a need if you are staying in a dorm, as I am planning on studying abroad a easily portable one that can be smaller when needed is a huge advantage.

If you live in a dorm, slippers are going to be a complete necessary. I find more comfy ones that are fuzzy to be best as they bring the most comfort and these ones are able to be worn outside of your dorm if you need to use them when in a hurry.
