Wifi Bible - Routers

First thing's first. Don't bottleneck yourself. I love setting my WiFi name something funny like, "Pretty Fly For A WiFi", or, β€œDrop It Like It’s Hotspot” - Not sure where to start? Tap here to read more As a WiFi user, more and more of your devices will become WiFi enabled like your light bulbs, switches, air cons, vacuum cleaners, you name it.. So, WiFi 5, WiFi 6, WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 - As of April 2024, these are the available technologies to choose from. The WiFi you probably know more than any of the rest is actually WiFi 5. It had the longest reign out of the lot, and the jump to WiFi 6 was only very recent for most people.ISP's have only just started sending out WiFi 6 routers by default. From personal experience I have also made WiFi 6 our minimum standard for recommending routers. Most will associate the jump from WiFi '5' to '6' as when routers went from beaming out just one 2.4Ghz signal, to then outputting a 2.4Ghz AND 5Ghz signal you could connect to either one. Nowadays, routers are so smart they can output just one signal (or SSID) and the router can assign it to one of the two bands automatically. Back in WiFi 5 days, the device limit was noticeable, and people often reached the limits - usually between 10-20 devices, this would cause dropouts and slowness, WiFi 6 has fixed this other issues we don't see in routers today. When WiFi 6 came out, it really at least in my experience, completely flattened out all bugs and issues I've ever experienced with WiFi. Like dropouts, and range issues, this just doesn't happen now, and It is almost unbelievable that WiFi 7 is already a thing. Before I begin recommending things, Ill conclude by saying that yes WiFi 7 is technically the latest available technology, but the seriously recent jump from 5 to 6 and then to 6E is such a phenomenal leap in user friendliness and technological advancements we have ever seen in WiFi - That the choice is yours - my network advice is to spend a good amount on your router as it is your #1 bottlenecking point of vulnerability, however keep in mind that with most devices not even being ready for 6E let alone 7, you could at least be ready for when you do upgrade those devices like your phone, PC, wifi adapter or laptop by opting for WiFi 7 - or if you don't have ridiculously fast data plan but still need good WiFi for a small amount of devices; save some money and go with 6/6E. You'll still have those benefits of having a much higher device limit and less interference than with any WiFi 5 router.SO! Time to actually review something! For home broadband you will see I really like ASUS at the moment! Having been with various ISP's since 2015 such as Telstra, TPG, Exetel, Superloop, Leaptel, Optus & more, I have always preferred to bring my own modem, even if they have already issued one out to me, reason being usually more features, better security and WiFi range. They usually send out routers that are a bit behind in tech too, WiFi has improved vastly allowing for less interference and more devices on one router; my favourite feature in WiFi is MESH! It allows for more devices by reassigning which router your device is connected to, based off which router it's closest to! A great concept in theory and I find ASUS has mastered its practice. I do make other recommendations below! It's a good idea to go long on your WiFi Router and get at least WiFi 6 technology as your modem really is the workhorse of your network.
