Must See but Touristy
All incredible, but worth it for Michelangelo’s Pieta alone.
Official Website of St. Peter's Basilica | A masterpiece to explore
Beautiful place to spend a morning. Fun to see all the ruins up close.
Palatine Hill - Opening hours, tickets and how to get there - Rome
You can tour it in 15 minutes, but you’ll remember it forever. Huge bonus if you go when it’s raining! We loved watching it fall through the oculus.
Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres: Pantheon of Rome
Definitely a tourist trap, but you’ve got to go at least once to toss in a coin.
The Trevi Fountain | Turismo Roma
A well preserved Roman city—still in tact. A lot like Pompeii only not so gruesome and way less busy. The kids loved that we could go into so much of it (unlike most of the ruins in Rome). It’s a 30 minute train ride from Rome but SOOO worth it.
Welcome to the archaeological park of Ostia Antica
We dragged our 4 kids under 12 to the Vatican Museum. Some loved it, some were bored, but they all appreciate it in retrospect. When they come across one of the pieces in school they think it’s so cool that they saw it in person.
Vatican Museums – Official Website
Basically all the most incredible Bernini sculpture. Bernini is arguably the best sculptor of all time, so definitely worth seeing. Lots of nudity though if you or your kids are sensitive to that.
Official Website - Galleria Borghese
So many people, but one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. The kids loved it too. Definitely do the children’s audio tour for the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel.
Sistine Chapel - Vatican Museums
Off the Beaten Track and Very Worth Your Time
You can rent row boats and paddle around. One of our favorite family memories.
Villa Borghese
Surprisingly fun way to spend a day in Rome. Located in within the Villa Borghese park.
Welcome to Bioparco di Roma
One of the most interesting, and picturesque places I’ve ever visited. Learn a little while wandering the extensive grounds.
Villa Adriana (Tivoli) - UNESCO World Heritage Centre
One of our family’s favorites. 12th century medieval church built on top of a 4th century church built on top of 1st century Roman ruins. So unique and interesting.
Basilica di San Clemente a Roma: orari e info per la visita
Extremely touristy but you kind of have to see it… because it’s the colosseum.
Online Tickets - Parco Archeologico del Colosseo
Visiting one of the catacombs is a must in Rome. This is my favorite and the best for kids.
Catacomb of St. Sebastian
Food and lodging
One of my favorite family hotels ever. Free breakfast on the terrace with views of St Peter’s Basilica.
4 Stars Aparthotel Trianon Borgo Pio Rome | Official Site
My kids honestly could have lived off pizza and gelato, but you’ll probably want to try a little more than that. These are great recommendations.
Where to eat in Rome: a local's guide | Luggage and Life
Impossible to choose just one pizza place in Rome. It’s the best pizza in the world so eat A LOT of it. Always best to find a place a little off the beaten place that doesn’t have an English menu.
A Very Subjective List of the Best Pizzerias in Rome
You MUST eat gelato in Rome. Try to find some not on a major tourist street, it will be less expensive and probably taste better.
