My recent reads, a little bit of everything, and a few books I haven’t stopped thinking about. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately, but there have still been some incredible five-star reads mixed in with the ones that didn’t quite hit the ma...
A chilling look at motherhood, generational trauma, and a mother questioning her own daughter. This hit especially close to home given the real-life headlines at the time.
The Push: A GMA Book Club Pick
Two estranged former roommates inherit their beloved New York brownstone together, bringing old wounds, unresolved feelings, and the perfect fall romance.
It's Different This Time
When a young Mi’kmaq girl disappears from a Maine blueberry field, two families carry the grief and secrets for decades. Beautifully written and important, though less memorable than I hoped.
The Berry Pickers
Secrets and scandal unfold at an elite New England boarding school. A fitting fall read from an auto-read author, even if the teen drama felt juvenile.
The Academy
A small-town café, a grumpy farmer, and a fresh start make this a quick, cozy fall romance. Not groundbreaking, but a fun seasonal read.
The Pumpkin Spice Café
A young boy navigates poverty, addiction, and survival in Appalachia. An emotionally devastating, beautifully written story that became an easy five-star read for me.
Demon Copperhead
Three women’s lives intersect around the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre in this gripping blend of historical fiction and thriller. Exactly my kind of combination.
None Left to Tell
A newly married emergency preparedness director faces a life-altering crisis in this twisty family drama about motherhood, secrets, and the stories we tell ourselves. Incredible and unputdownable.
Hollow Bones
A 1950s housewife begins questioning her reality and the expectations placed on women. Best approached as historical fiction rather than a conventional thriller.
The Mad Wife
Two friends on a rural road trip become targets in a terrifying game of cat and mouse. Heart-pounding, even if it wasn’t my favourite thriller.
Run on Red
After a life-changing accident strains their marriage, a couple must rediscover each other and decide whether their relationship can be rebuilt. I wanted more emotional impact.
No Matter What
A woman’s seemingly secure twenty-year marriage ends without warning, forcing her to reconsider everything she believed about her husband. A gripping memoir I’ve recommended to so many people.
Strangers
Two strangers make a chilling revenge pact, setting off a twist-filled psychological thriller. One of my favourite thrillers of the year and truly unputdownable.
Kill for Me, Kill for You
A charming fall romance set around a cozy orchard inn, with small-town atmosphere and seasonal sweetness. A cute read I enjoyed more than The Pumpkin Spice Café.
The Honeycrisp Orchard Inn
FBI agent Gardner Camden and his team investigate a murdered informant, a dangerous militia, and a possible serial killer. Enjoyable, but I preferred the first Head Cases.
Inside Man
A woman seeking refuge at her family’s old estate uncovers a dark history involving witchcraft, strange occurrences, and buried secrets. My favourite Freida read in a while, perfect for spooky season.
The Witch (Deluxe Edition)
In 1930s North Carolina, a newly orphaned teenager fights for her future amid family secrets and the state’s disturbing eugenics history. Good, though not as memorable as I hoped.
The Last Carolina Girl
A Black labour and delivery nurse faces a courtroom battle after a white supremacist couple’s baby dies in her care. A powerful, thought-provoking read I absolutely devoured.
Small Great Things
A raw memoir from one of the Gosselin children about growing up on reality television and the painful experiences hidden behind the cameras. Heart-wrenching and deeply eye-opening.
