There's plenty to do in Wellington and surrounds. Here are a few suggestions.
If you like birds or nature, then this is for you. With their valley now largely predator free, the native birdlife is returning in droves. New Zealand native birds are next level.

Heading over to the Wairarapa for the day is well worth the effort. But don't drive yourself over that Rimutaka Hill road, take a tour and relax!
