The wicker on my go-to basket was rough enough to scratch tissue paper through the wrap. Tried rubber bands and fabric scraps before finding covers that grip without sliding off mid-carry.

Once I lined the inside of my baskets, the scratching problem basically disappeared. Bonus: everything looks way more put together when you hand someone a lined basket.

Realized the scratching problem was partly about not enough padding between gifts and basket walls. The right filler does double duty — protection and presentation.

After enough scratching incidents I started paying attention to which baskets actually have sanded, coated handles. Some are smooth right out of the box and save you the trouble entirely.

Started sticking felt pads on the inside edges where gifts were rubbing against rough spots. Took five minutes and completely solved the problem for baskets I already owned.

Sometimes I just wrap the handle in ribbon or fabric and it solves the scratch problem while making the basket look like a Pinterest project. Two birds, one spool of ribbon.

Wrapping the whole basket in cellophane keeps everything locked in place so nothing rubs against the handle during transport. Should have started doing this years ago.

Even with handle covers, driving with a basket on the passenger seat was risky. Started putting finished baskets inside padded bags for the car ride and nothing has broken since.

When I just needed a fast fix for a splintering handle twenty minutes before leaving, hot glue and fabric scraps saved me more than once.
