Before Malaysia I thought I knew milk tea. Then someone handed me a pulled tea from a roadside stall and I realized I'd been drinking sad beige water my whole life. These three are the ones I kept going back to.

Someone told me to order cham and I thought they were messing with me. Coffee AND tea in one cup? Sounded wrong. First sip and I understood why half of Penang drinks this daily.

Back home I drink plain black coffee and thought I had standards. Malaysian kopi o knocked me sideways — it's roasted with butter and sugar and served over ice and somehow it works better than anything I brew at home.

Saw this bright pink drink everywhere and assumed it was some sugary kids' thing. Turns out it's rose syrup with evaporated milk over ice and it's genuinely refreshing. My mistake was judging it by color.

Nothing prepared me for how different fresh coconut tastes compared to the boxed stuff at Whole Foods. Standing on a Langkawi beach drinking from an actual coconut with a straw — that memory alone was worth the flight.

Green jelly worms in coconut milk over shaved ice with palm sugar. Sounds weird, tastes like the best dessert drink hybrid that's ever existed. Ate it every single day for two weeks and my only regret is that I can't get it at home.

First time I saw this layered drink I thought it was a prop. Three distinct stripes of tea, evaporated milk, and palm sugar sitting in a tall glass looking like modern art. Then I stirred it and it became the smoothest iced tea I've ever had.

Watched a guy feed whole sugarcane stalks through a press and hand me a bag of green juice for about a dollar. Tasted like liquid summer. Sometimes the simplest drink wins and this is proof.

Translates to ‘cat eye water’ which almost stopped me from trying it. Made from dried longan and winter melon, served ice cold from huge vats at hawker stalls. One sip and the weird name stopped mattering entirely.
