Made in Japan: A Complete Carry

Purple Star emoji 14 items
Five things you carry, every one made in Japan by a Japanese maker — and that second half does the heavy lifting. Spyderco's Delica is forged in Seki and it's still a Colorado knife, so it stays home. Fourteen items, fourteen makers, running from a n...

About $410 for five, and proof the theme doesn't need money to work. The Higonokami is a 130-year-old design with no lock and no clip, the spork costs nine dollars, and both are made like someone's name is on them. Because it is.

Aogami carbon steel in a folded brass handle, made in Miki City by the only company holding the Higonokami trademark. A friction folder — no lock, you keep your thumb on the lever. It will rust if you neglect it, and that's part of the deal.

Buy this by reference number or you will get the wrong watch. Only the JDM refs — RN-AC0002B, RN-AC0003L, RN-AK0702Y — are assembled in Japan; the international Bambino with the near-identical name isn't. F6724 automatic, hacking and hand-winding, do...

Three millimetres thick and twenty-two grams, hand-sewn in an Osaka atelier. Three cards and five folded notes, no coin pocket — a wallet for someone who has already decided to carry less. Japanese construction, Italian Buttero leather.

Solid brass, four inches, takes cheap D1 refills, patinas hard. It's on my patina list too and I'm not going to pretend otherwise — it's the right answer to two different questions.

Sixteen grams, one piece of titanium, made in Tsubame-Sanjo. Nine dollars. Snow Peak manufactures plenty elsewhere, so don't generalise from this to the rest of the catalogue — the titanium line is the Japan-made one.

Worth the Money

About $2,080 for five, and the tier where every category steps up in mechanism rather than finish. The nail nipper is not a bit — Suwada hand-forges and hand-sharpens them in Sanjo, and people replace theirs after twenty years, reluctantly.

Thirty-three layers of damascus over a VG-10 core at 60-61 HRC, micarta over stainless liners, made in Seki. The step up from the Higonokami that's about mechanism — a real liner lock and a reversible clip — not just about looking nicer.

The 6R55 runs 72 hours, and the curved sapphire over a 40mm case is the closest Seiko gets to the 1965 original without charging Grand Seiko money. Same warning as the Orient: SBDC prefixes and J1 suffixes are Japan-made, Seiko 5 is Malaysia.

Thirty-six grams, and it holds seven cards, twenty coins and fifteen unfolded notes through a patented inner-hook construction rather than by being bulky. Made in right- and left-handed versions, which almost nobody does. Lifetime warranty.

14k gold nib, and the Slip & Seal inner cap means you can leave it inked for months and it still writes on the first stroke. That one feature is why this is the Japanese pen people actually use rather than admire.

Hand-forged, hand-polished and hand-sharpened in Sanjo since 1926. It's a nail nipper, and it's the best-made object in this tier — the kind of tool you buy once and hand on. TSA-friendly, comes in a lined case.

Endgame

Four items, no gadget. About $9,400 all in, and the Nakaya takes six months — so if you're building the whole set, order that one first and let it arrive last, like a good dessert.

ZDP-189 clad in VG-10, hand-ground convex and mirror-polished to a standard that makes other production knives look approximate. Rockstead makes about 800 knives a year, so stock rotates fast and the flagship is usually a one-to-three month wait.

Shell cordovan, aniline-dyed, with steerhide lining reinforced in horsehide, made in Tsuchiya's own workshops. Cordovan doesn't crease, it rolls — this will look better in five years than it does new, which is the entire argument for spending this.

Urushi over ebonite, hand-lacquered in Aka-tame so the red only shows where the light hits it, and a nib Nakaya grinds to how you actually hold a pen. Six-month wait, no rushing it. The one thing here I'd tell someone to buy before the watch.
