Favorite film and TV adaptions of literary works đź“–

My favorite depiction of this classic by Charlotte Brontë. The landscape is just how you’d imagine it to be from reading the book, the characters look true to form, and the soundtrack is gorgeous.
Jane Eyre (2011)
Â
This is the ultimate all-star cast of British female greats (minus a few, notably). Judi Dench headlines this hilarious and heartwarming series based off of the Victorian novel by Elisabeth Gaskell.
Watch Cranford, S1 | Prime Video
Â
The most accurate depiction of one of the great classics. Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett are perfection.
Pride and Prejudice (TV Mini Series 1995)

Â
Even though I do love the 1995 TV series of this story, this film stands on its own as a beautiful (though not as thorough or accurate) depiction. Plus, quite frankly, this is just such a pretty movie—everything from the sets to the landscape to the ...
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Â
Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the few American actresses who can pull off a believable British accent, & she depicts the bossy but generous character of the titular character very well.
Emma (TV Movie 1996)
Â
A sumptuous telling of the Dickens classic. Top-tier actors and, as usual for any Dickens story, humor mixed in with tragedy mixed in with a resolved sense of justice and lessons learned.
Bleak House (TV Mini Series 2005)
Â
A solid adaptation of Dickens’ story with impeccable casting and fabulous scenery (particularly when they are in Italy).
Watch Little Dorrit
Â
My favorite screen adaptation of this hilarious memoir by Gerald Durrell. The casting is perfection. This movie makes me laugh out loud every time I watch it, and the scenery of Corfu, Greece is like going on a little visual/mental vacation.
My Family and Other Animals (TV Movie 2005)
Â
This film is a pretty decently done adaptation of the book by A.S. Byatt. Obviously, loads had to be left out in order to fit the story into the length of a standard film, but the casting and scenery are great.
Watch Possession | Prime Video
Â
The only on-screen version of AoGG that I think is worth watching. There will never be anyone else who could play Anne, Gilbert, Marilla, Matthew, Rachel, you name it, any better than this cast, and the soundtrack, the costumes, the scenery of PEi—al...
Anne of Green Gables: Official Site for the Original Series
Â
Anne of Avonlea is the must-watch sequel to Anne of Green Gables. These two actors will always be Anne and Gilbert to me.
Anne of Avonlea (TV Mini Series 1987)
Â
Based on the last novel ever written by Elizabeth Gaskell (who also wrote Cranford), this BBC adaptation is SO GOOD. They get everything right—the casting, the costumes, the sets, all of it.
Wives and Daughters (TV Mini Series 1999)
Â
This series was so well done. The comedy and emotional depth were both there throughout the whole story, and the casting was superb. The soundtrack is gorgeous, as well. Johnny Lee Miller is my favorite Mr. Knightly out of all of the portrayals of th...
