for my wilderness explorers who want to get in their daily steps, here are some of my fav places to take a walk just within arms reach
Map
Great park with trails for all levels. Variety of escalations, expect to spend a chunk of your day here.
Sleeping Giant State Park
Huge state park with nice views of New Haven and the coastline. Paved roadways great for a run or a bike ride, with dirt trails at different elevations as well. Great for your daily walk or even a picnic, with some tables and grills at the summit.
East Rock Park
Another great park in New Haven with views of the city. Has paved walkways as well as dirt trails. Park is big enough to spend a decent part of your day if you'd like. Make sure to check out Lake Wintergreen if you want to fish or swim.
West Rock Ridge State Park
Great for families, as it's not a long walk with a variety of animal and plant life to explore. Great views of the shoreline. Come here for a quick morning/afternoon walk
Long Wharf Nature Preserve
Beautiful trail, fully immersed in the forest. Great place to hike with families, however keep in mind that hunting is permitted EXCEPT on Sundays. Limited parking but usually quiet
Naugatuck State Forest | Connecticut State Parks and Forests
Easy trail with adjoining river, great for BBQs and swimming. Lifeguard and Park rangers are present. Ample parking at different ends of the park. Make sure to check CT.gov site for capacity updates.
