Google & Meta career certificates
Career certificates from Google and Meta, self-paced on Coursera. No degree needed, and you can usually start with a free trial.
For the friend who's into apps and design. You finish with real portfolio projects, not just a pile of videos.
Google UX Design Certificate
Zero tech experience? Start here. It's the most beginner-friendly of the Google certs and it's aimed at entry-level help desk jobs.
Google IT Support Certificate
Google's own data analytics cert for a fraction of a college class. Spreadsheets, SQL and Tableau, and it looks good on a resume. Check for the free trial first.
Google Data Analytics Certificate
Want to get paid to run ads or social for brands? This is the cheapest legit place to start. Self-paced and no degree needed.
Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate
If you're already the organized one at work, get the cert for it. PM skills carry over to almost any job, and this costs way less than a bootcamp.
Google Project Management Certificate
Made by Meta, so you learn how Facebook and Instagram ads actually work. Super useful if you want to freelance doing social for small businesses.
Meta Social Media Marketing Certificate
All-access learning memberships
Subscriptions that cover a lot of classes or books for one monthly price. Only worth it if you'll use them more than once a month.
Only makes sense if you'll do 2 or more certificates in a year. If you just want one, pay for that one and skip this.
Coursera Plus
Celebrity-taught classes on cooking, writing, business and more. Honestly better as a gift than for yourself, unless you'll really sit down and watch.
MasterClass
Ebooks and audiobooks for one monthly price. If you read more than one book a month, it's cheaper than buying them one by one.
Kobo Plus
Money books worth reading first
The money books I'd hand a friend who's starting from zero. Grab them used or from the library if you want to save even more.
Start with this one. Short chapters, no jargon, and it's more about habits than math.
The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel
Ramit's whole thing is automating your money and spending guilt-free on what you actually love. Great if you want a system, not a lecture.
I Will Teach You to Be Rich by Ramit Sethi
Strict? Yes. But if debt is what's stressing you out, the baby steps are really easy to follow.
The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
This one flips how you see spending: every purchase costs hours of your life. Good for cutting back without feeling deprived.
Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin
The clearest explanation of index funds I know of. Read it before you pay anyone to manage your money.
The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins
Credit scores, student loans, splitting bills with roommates. All the stuff school skipped, and perfect if you're starting from zero.
