My first week I tried to drain pasta by holding the lid at an angle and burned my hand. Then I realized I didn't own a single measuring cup, a decent knife, or even a can opener. These saved me from a month of sad microwave meals.

Moved in thinking I'd figure out cleaning later. Then I saw the dust bunnies the previous tenant left behind and realized I didn't own a single sponge. Had to wipe counters with paper towels and hope for the best.

First morning in my apartment I stepped out of the shower dripping wet with no bath mat, no towel hooks, and a shower curtain still in the packaging. Standing naked and cold in a bare bathroom is a humbling experience.

Slept on a bare mattress with a jacket as a blanket my first night because I assumed bedding was something I'd deal with later. Woke up freezing at 3 AM on a surface that smelled like warehouse plastic.

My first apartment closet was roughly the size of a phone booth. Piled everything on the floor for a month until I couldn't find a single matching sock. These turned chaos into something almost respectable.

Overhead fluorescent lighting made my living room look like a waiting room at the DMV. Spent the first month squinting at my phone in bed because I forgot to buy a single lamp. Ambiance matters more than I expected.

Tried to assemble a bookshelf with a butter knife and the back of a shoe. It went about as well as you'd expect. A basic toolkit would have saved me four hours and a lot of swearing at an IKEA instruction manual.

These are the things nobody puts on any moving list but you will absolutely need within 72 hours. Learned each one through minor disasters, mild panic, and at least one trip to the store in pajamas at 10 PM.
