The boardwalks at Cathedral Grove are deceptively slick when it rains — and it rains constantly. I nearly ate it twice on my first visit wearing regular sneakers on wet cedar roots.

Port Alberni sits in a rainforest climate so you'll get rained on — but you'll also warm up fast walking. I made the mistake of bringing a rubber rain jacket and was soaked in sweat within twenty minutes.

Cathedral Grove is dim even at noon — those massive trees block most of the light. My phone photos came out grainy and dark on visit one, which was heartbreaking because the trees were unbelievable in person.

Morning at Cathedral Grove was 8°C and by afternoon in Port Alberni it was 20°C. I packed for one temperature and regretted it both directions.

You don't need a 50L pack for Cathedral Grove — the main trails are short. But you do need something to carry water, layers, and a camera without it bouncing around on uneven ground.

Didn't expect mosquitoes in a temperate rainforest — wrong. The shaded areas near Cameron River breed them like crazy, especially in June and July.

Port Alberni is about 35 minutes from the grove and there's nothing at the trailhead — no water fountain, no vending machine, nothing. Pack everything before you leave town.

Standing in front of an 800-year-old tree hits different when you actually know what you're looking at. The interpretive signs at Cathedral Grove are decent but barely scratch the surface.

The most incredible part of Cathedral Grove is way above your head — without optics you're squinting at blurry green shapes 60 meters up and missing the eagles, woodpeckers, and epiphytes.

The drive from Nanaimo to Port Alberni on Highway 4 is winding, gorgeous, and about 90 minutes of mountain passes. My partner got carsick twice and we almost turned around.

Most people blast through Port Alberni on their way to Tofino and miss everything — we almost did too until a local at a coffee shop told us to slow down.

Cathedral Grove's trails are short but the uneven root systems and constant stepping over logs did a number on my knees and ankles that I didn't expect from a ‘easy’ walk.
