First October I went hard with face paint, I skipped prep entirely. Woke up looking like I'd aged ten years overnight. Now I treat my face like a canvas primer situation before anything dramatic goes on.

Nothing worse than spending an hour on a detailed face design and watching it slide off your nose by 10 PM. These primers literally saved my pumpkin-carved look from melting at a sweaty house party.

You can't carve a design into patchy, uneven color. I learned that the hard way when my orange pumpkin base looked more like a bad spray tan. Getting the base even changed everything about my face art.

Finding pigments intense enough to actually look like a carved pumpkin — not a faded watercolor — took me embarrassingly long. These are the ones that made people stop and stare.

The thing that took my pumpkin face from flat costume paint to genuinely creepy was learning to contour the carved sections so they looked like actual hollowed-out grooves. People literally tried to touch my face.

Hour four of my first Halloween party, I touched my face without thinking and smeared half my design. Now I set everything like my life depends on it and nothing moves until I decide it moves.

Trying to paint sharp triangular pumpkin eyes with a big fluffy brush was my villain origin story. The right tiny brushes turned my wobbly shapes into something that actually looked intentional.

Even with a full pumpkin carved onto my face, my actual eyes looked weirdly normal and human poking through. Adding dramatic eye makeup made the whole thing come together and feel genuinely unsettling.

Regular lipstick on top of face paint is a nightmare — it slides, feathers, and ruins every line near your mouth. Found lip products that actually cooperate with a fully painted face.

A carved pumpkin glows from the inside. Flat orange paint on a face does not. Adding strategic glow in the right spots is what made strangers at a bar tell me my face looked like actual magic.

Spent forty-five minutes scrubbing orange pigment off my face with regular cleanser once. Went to work the next day with faint pumpkin triangles still visible on my cheeks. Never again.

Even with perfect prep and removal, wearing a full painted face for eight hours takes a toll. These are what I slap on the morning after to undo the damage before my skin rebels.
