Military
Where countless gamer tropes came from.
Peak drama back in the day. Really felt like I was storming the bunkers. I can still hear the soundtrack. This title stands tall in my memory.
Medal of Honor Frontline (2002)
Great companion to Frontline, except this game simulates the fighting in the Pacific. I can remember the mild terror I felt in turning every corner for the first time.
Medal of Honor Rising Sun (2003)
Yes, I was a big MoH fan. I enjoyed every title I tried, including Airborne. Great time.
Medal of Honor Airborne (2007)
The first one ever! The game that spawned the hyper-successful franchise that we've all heard of. Get back to the CoD roots.
Call of Duty (2003)
MW2 was the classic Xbox Live lobby experience for me. The rush of a new match starting. The memorable maps, sound effects, voice acting. Everything about this game sits in my brain.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Untold hours spent in the Zombies mode. Kino der Toten created friends and inspired all-nighters. Such a formative game for me.
Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Sci-Fi
Legendary titles with legendary stories.
This game stands as legend in gaming history. Valve moved the industry forward and spawned countless fans. Half-Life is never too old to experience for the first or fourteenth time.
Half-Life (1998)
Simply incredible. The mechanics, the environment, the ambiance, the tools. This game is 11 out of 10.
Half-Life 2 (2004)
Yeah, this list wouldn't even be allowed to exist if it didn't have Halo. Look, back in the day, this game was all anyone talked about in school. Cannot be understated how important this game is.
Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Emotional. Thrilling. The hugely impactful Halo sequel which still captivates the memories of people who played it back in its heyday. Still worth experiencing for the first time.
Halo 2 (2004)
Utterly terrifying as a first-time player, but I fell in love with the lore and backdrop. This game made me appreciate art and music from the 1930s and 40s.
Bioshock (2007)
Kid you not, this is my favor game of all time. I know it's a bit late for most millennials, but I still think about the writing, ambiance, and plot twists of Infinite.
BioShock Infinite (2013)
Puzzle & Co-op
Fast and fun action, but with friends.
If you know, you know. If you don't know, TF2 is a legendary game that is still active today. Amazing community and online play. Hilarious characters. Incredible experience.
Team Fortress 2 - (2007)
Hard to find a standalone copy now, so I've linked The Orange Box, which was the original bundle of Portal with Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode Two. Portal was the add-on content which ended up being my favorite, full stop.
Portal (2007)
A+ writing that makes you laugh. A+ puzzles which actually force you to slow down and think. A+ voice acting, art, and soundtrack. This game is pretty close to perfect in my book.
Portal 2 (2011)
A deep cut, but I still remember the amazement I felt for the first time when playing this game. It allows you to rewind time and replay moments of the story. Blew my mind.
Timeshift - (2007)
Astonishingly fun and horrifying cooperative zombie shooter. My friends and I never grew tired of this one.
Left 4 Dead - (2008)
A chaotically great time. Hysterical. Expansive. A breath of fresh air at the time, and it still holds up to new players. Franchise still going strong.
