This list is all about open-world and role-playing games. Late 90s and the 2000s. That was the golden age of gaming for me. Whether you want to revisit some of the greats or explore some you’ve never heard of, I encourage you to dive in. Video games ...

Bethesda
Yeah, this studio gets their own category.
Top 5 game for me. Of all time. Well over 100 hours in this one. I still hear the soundtrack and the absurd NPC dialogues when I close my eyes.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)
I remember seeing the ads for this game and my mouth dropping. The clash of feel-good oldies and the war-stricken landscape was just so … right. Amazing game.
Fallout 3 (2008)
Ain't that a kick in the head? Wow, I still remember the first mission. Ambiance of this title is second-to-none. Early-to-mid 20th century, but Western.
Fallout: New Vegas (2010)
Of course Skyrim is on this list. It's legend carries on to this day, and for good reason. So much can be said about this game, so suffice to say here that it's worth your time if you've never given it a try.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Crime
Breaking all the rules and wreaking havoc, just because.
Absurdly fun. One of those experiences which makes less sense the more you think about it, so less stressing about the details makes the game's finesse shine.
Just Cause (2006)
I'll be the first to admit GTA isn't for everyone, but this is an enduring franchise because of the breadth and depth. IV is a behemoth of a game for when it was released.
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
RPG in space, with multiple possible storylines. This was big fun for me and friends to both discuss and play.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Grimy by today's standards, this game was unbelievably progressive 15 years ago when I saw the trailer. The seamless act of toggling between cinema and video game was something to behold.
L. A. Noire (2011)
I know, a bit late for some millennials, and obviously not the first installment from the franchise, but 3 stands out in my memory. Such a fun experience. Plus, as a villian, Vaas still looms in my mind.
Far Cry 3 (2012)
Assassin
The thrill of stealth meets adventure meets beat-em-up.
I went to Blockbuster to rent this game with two friends and we stayed up all night playing. The novelty of seeing parkour in this way was enough to play AC1 over and over.
Assassin's Creed (2007)
An excellent extension from the first game, and this time in a more appealing setting. Controversially, this is where I stopped playing the AC franchise. To me, the first two were the best.
Assassin's Creed II (2009)
Create & Explore
An eclectic mishmash of the more uplifting options.
A bit left field for this list's theme, but I'd be remiss as a millennial if I didn't mention The Sims. The franchise speaks for itself. I played this game for hours and hours as a kid.
The Sims (2000)
A true joy to play. The narration is top-tier. The art and visuals are iconic. The creator mode was and is a blast. Wonderful experience for young and old.
LittleBigPlanet (2008)
Kind of silly to mention Minecraft since the game is what it is today. I will say though, I played it back in the day and never would have predicted it would stick around. Fun and novel, then and now.
Minecraft (2011)
Unique in every way. Relaxing, yet engaging. I played this one to decompress and smile.
