Edutainment
Boot up your Windows 98 for these.
Freddi was a staple for anyone playing Humongous. Part adventure, part humor, part education. What wasn't to love?
Freddi Fish 2: The Case of The Haunted Schoolhouse
1
I can still hear Putt Putt's voice. Very engaging, very 90s. Critical playing from that era.
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time (1997)
The sound effects alone were a master class in 90s edutainment. Sam as a character was uniquely perfect.
Pajama Sam: No Need To Hide (1996)
My personal favorite Pajama Sam installment. Beating this game felt like a true victory for my little brain.
Pajama Sam 2: Thunder & Lightning (1998)
My #1 deep cut recommendation. I exhausted this disc and loved every second. Fun fact: this game had me solving the Tower of Hanoi puzzle in kindergarten. I had no idea how difficult that was back then.
The Adventures of Batman & Robin Activity Center
Another deep cut for a niche audience. To me, this was endless fun back in the day.
Superman Activity Center (1997)
Backyard
Pick-up sports for when it was raining outside.
This game taught me how to play baseball. No joke. Wonderful experience that stuck with me. Pablo was my guy.
Backyard Baseball (1997)
As a kid who played soccer starting at 5, this game was a dream for me. Cannon for Backyard Sports.
Backyard Soccer (1998)
Ridiculous amounts of fun. Back when Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice were on the scene. Hocus Pocus was my signature move.
Backyard Football (1999)
Star Wars
The most accessible and lovable sci-fi available.
I can't begin to tell you how liberating it was to drive a pod racer like Anakin. This was every kid's dream after watching Episode I.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer (1999)
Lost track of how many times I played this game through to completion. Not in the hall of fame by any means, but a great window into fan gaming in the early 2000s.
Star Wars: The New Droid Army (2002)
More fuel for the kids who grew up on the Prequels. People love to hate on Episodes I and II, and they're welcome to, but for us millennials, that was Star Wars.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)
Hands down, this was it. This was THE game. My friends and I wore out the disc and never failed to have a fantastic time.
Star Wars: Battlefront (2004)
Oddballs
Rounding out my huge list of recs.
I absolutely remember this one. Not in great detail, but enough to know it's very much going to satisfy that 90s aesthetic for you.
Conker's Pocket Tales (1999)
Not too many people were playing this one, but it was borderline stealth, beat-em-up for me. As a chronic Batman supporter, I was there.
Batman: Vengeance (2001)
Before you roll your eyes, know that this was basically extreme Frogger. Not just jumped across the same road over and over. This game was HARD.
Frogger's Adventures: Temple of the Frog (2001)
I bought this game at a used bookstore and was thoroughly proud of this decision. The game was worth a play. Scratches that Scooby itch.
Scooby Doo! Night 100 Frights (2002)
Very left field given the rest of this list, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't mention Tekken. Yoshimitsu was my guy.
