How to keep your yard from becoming a jungle

House with Garden emoji 16 items
It's crazy expensive to pay someone else to maintain your yard (and do a good job). It's also pretty expensive to buy the needed tools and gear from your local home improvement store. If you're like me, you're looking for the middle ground, so here a...

Power Tools

It's not that I'm a Kobalt loyalist. I like electric, battery-powered tools AND I like the cross-compatibility for the batteries. Each of these 5 tools uses the exact same battery.

I use this exact mower on a quarter acre lot. Depending on grass height, moisture, etc. it takes over an hour, but it gets the job done. No complaints given the price range.

Keep those edges looking decent. It only takes an extra 15 minutes or so to get it 80% good.

Rounding out the trifecta for easy grass maintenance, you need to get those clippings out of the way quickly. This 4.0 Ah battery is more than enough for an average house lot.

I was hesitant to buy a chainsaw at first, but I'm genuinely surprised by how many times I've used it in the last few years. This bad boy has taken down WHOLE TREES, on top of basic work on tree limbs and bushes. It's paid for itself many times over.

If you have hedges or bushes, this trimmer helps keep them under control without paying hundreds or thousands to a landscaper.

Manual Tools

Double-check that you have these. Highly affordable and perfect for those small, quick jobs.

Basic, yet essential. Clear away dust, leaves, debris, etc. without needing to do the taxing sweeping motion with traditional brooms.

Nothing fancy. Just a normal rake. I use mine for more than just leaves, like getting mulch back into place or dispersing clumps of grass clippings.

For those situations where the branch is too thick to break or snip off. Very handy to have. I can never predict when a tree branch will need to come down (e.g., unexpected storm) or a bush I'm trimming will have a huge section needing to come out.

Because sometimes it's simply faster and easier to grab the manual shears and trim the bush. Getting out the electric one (especially if you have a corded model) may be more work!

May seem like an odd inclusion, but one time I needed to break up a small tree stump and my sledge hammer came to the rescue. Great thing to have laying around, just in case.

Yes, you can buy more batteries if the work is burning through the ones you already have. Remember, batteries slowly degrade over time and it's sometimes cheaper to buy a new battery than it is to buy a new power tool.

Keep your hands protected, especially when doing repetitive movements or working with sharp things. No brainer.

Protect your eyes! The number of times my string trimmer kicks a rock or wood chip into my face are too many to count. It only takes one perfectly-placed projectile to change your life for the worse. The glasses are ten bucks.

Don't be like me and run out of string halfway through the trimming. It's pretty cheap to have several packs on standby. I like the .095" type and I'll cut off maybe 6' at a time when I refill my trimmer.

Such a great ladder. Many times it's proven right for the job due to it's ability to adjust its height. I'm talking cutting tree branches, trimming tall hedges, hanging Christmas lights, painting walls, changing exterior light bulbs, the list goes on...

A bag made just for the Little Giant ladder. May seem superfluous at first, but I don't want to be without this silly bag now. Very convenient to have a place to dump tools or parts when you're up on the ladder and suddenly need both your hands. Grea...
