I am a self-taught crocheter of a little more than a year. It is such a fun hobby — it’s a great time killer, the results are beautiful, and I find it to be meditative usually! Here’s everything you need (and want) to get started.

The NEEDs
What I think you absolutely need before getting *too* far in the crochet rabbit hole
These are my daily drivers. 2.25mm to 6mm. The grips are also SO comfortable compared to a metal hook - pain free hands, fingers and wrists :)
Amour Crochet Hooks
These are a much more affordable option than the Clover hooks with a similar range! 3.25-6.5mm. If your fingers hurt from the hook after long periods of time, try making yourself a finger sleeve for some extra cushion :)
Anodized Aluminum Crochet Hook Set by Loops & Threads ...
Grab a bag of these cute stitch markers — unless you can count perfectly in your head while people talk to you 😉 nothing is worse than frogging because you forgot your count!
Clover® Quick-Locking Stitch Markers, Medium
You’ll need these to weave in your ends at the end of a project. Pro tip: knot and then weave for extra security. NEVER just tie a knot and cut off, your project will fall apart eventually :(
Steel Yarn Needles by Loops & Threads
This is a bit of a hot take in the crochet community… but hear me out. Tension is so important in your projects, which is why you have to keep it consistent. I really struggled with tension at first, got myself a ring, used it for ~2 weeks (until it ...
7pcs Crochet Rings Adjustable Yarn Tension Rings Handmade Crochet Tension Ring for Finger Knitting Yarn Tension Control Ring
I do 90% of my projects with Big Twist Value. I think it’s easy to work with, the fibers don’t separate, and it’s soft enough for me! I’d recommend starting with acrylic yarn like this - it’s cheaper and more durable than other blends. Pick a medium ...
Big Twist® Value Yarn
The WANTs
This is just like the one I use! I think it makes working so much easier - I never have to deal with knots and tangles while crocheting, since I take care of it when I wind the yarn. I also think it makes yarn smaller and easier to store.
Manual Yarn Ball Winder with Metal Handle and Tabletop ...
Same concept! This one is a bit more expensive since it’s electric - but less work for you.
Automatic Yarn Cake Winder with Adjustable Speed & ...
I LOVE MY YARN HOLDER. If you wind your yarn, it will sit perfectly in this. Since it’s magnetic and suspended, when the yarn is pulled, it spins! Allowing for easy working and no more throwing your skein across the room🤣
Wooden Spinner with Magnetic Base & Anti-Slip Pads
This is just like the one I have! It clips around your finger and makes it super easy to keep track of what row or stitch you’re on. I like to use it to count stitches on my initial chain, and then I use it to count rows/rounds after that

The DON’Ts
I know they’re cute, but don’t get these. They’re heavy and HUGE compared to the small plastic ones. They can stretch and tear your yarn :(
