Rabbit Home & Habitat

Your bun’s space sets the tone for their health and happiness. Forget the tiny cages—think cozy, easy to clean, and safe for zoomies. A good setup saves time, mess, and vet bills later.

⚠️ **Mom Tip:** Avoid wire floors—they hurt little feet and cause sore hocks. Stick with fleece, foam mats, or waterproof pads for easy cleaning.

**IMPORTANT: READ BELOW**

Their set up should include:
- Large x-pen (NOT a pet store cage)
- Washable pee pads (some bunnies will chew up the disposable ones and may be harmed by this)
- Litter box + paper-based litter (their hay should also be in or above their litter box)
- Hidey house or tunnel (as prey animals they need somewhere to retreat when they feel afraid)
- Soft fleece blanket or rug (they need traction for their feet)

A large pen gives your rabbit room to hop, stretch, and binky safely. Go for one that’s at least 4x6 ft, solid on the bottom, and easy to fold up for cleaning. *Must-have.*

Rabbits should NEVER live in a cage-they require space to hop and zoom around. An X-Pen is one of the best options to house their essentials and is recommended at least until your bunny is confident in its new environment.

Rabbits love to potty where they eat—so place the litter box under or beside the hay rack. High sides keep hay and litter inside while still letting your bun hop in easily. *Must-have.*

One of the BEST things about having a rabbit is that they can be litter box trained. Pro tip: Only place their food in or above their litter box. If you didn't know, their poop doesn't even smell! Stainless steel is a great option to avoid stains and...

Buns need a cozy spot to feel safe. A wooden or cardboard hideout gives them comfort and privacy—especially important in new homes or loud households. *Must-have.*

It is ESSENTIAL that your rabbit has a place to hide for some privacy or the protection they naturally desire as a prey animal. They NEED a place they can run to to feel safe.

Nutrition & Feeding Time

Healthy diet = happy, long-living bun. Focus on unlimited hay, pellets, and some leafy greens—not the other way around.

FOOD: Just like any other mammal, a way to a rabbit's heart is through their stomach. Except a rabbit has to eat ALL DAY. Hay and water must be available to your rabbit at all times as this is the main part of their diet. To keep your rabbit healthy,...

For baby buns Alfalfa hay is typically recommended while older buns usually do well with Timothy hay. If you choose to supplement with pellets, be mindful of their ingredients as most brands are filled with fillers that can upset your rabbit's digest...

The only brand I can wholeheartedly recommend is Sherwood Pet Health

WATER: Rabbits require as much water as a cat or small dog. A water bottle is therefor NOT a good option for their main water source. A heavy bottomed bowl is the best option to avoid spills.

Bunnies need to munch all day to keep their teeth at a healthy length. Giving them enough hay to munch on is essential to their diet. Hay feeders may also help contain hay messes as well as reduce hay waste :)
Rabbit Diet: What to Feed a Pet Bunny

This should be 80% of your rabbit’s diet. Fresh, fragrant hay keeps digestion smooth and teeth naturally trimmed. Store it in a dry, breathable bin. *Must-have.*

Timothy hay is typically the most appropriate hay for an adult bunny’s diet.

Keeps hay clean and encourages healthy eating. Mount it above the litter box for easy munching and less mess. *Must-have.*

Pro-tip: Place your rabbit's hay feeder directly above their litter box so they naturally poop where they're eating. That's partly how to contain their coacoa puff mess!

Pellets should supplement hay, not replace it. Choose a plain, timothy-based pellet with no seeds or colored bits.

These nutritionally complete and balanced rabbit pellets provide vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, short- and long-strand fibers, balanced amino acids and healthy energy sources

Bunnies love to tip things over, but a solid, heavy bowl stays put. Skip plastic—it traps bacteria and absorbs odors.

Bunny Health & Safety Stash

Bunnies hide illness well, so prevention and quick observation are everything. Keep these tools handy—you’ll thank yourself later.

⚠️ **Mom Tip:** Learn your bun’s normal habits—how much they eat, drink, and poop. Any change can mean something’s off. Trust your gut and call the vet early.

Cleaning hacks that keep your bun’s space (and your home) smelling fresh without harsh chemicals.

⚠️ **Mom Tip:** Skip strong-smelling cleaners—rabbits’ noses are sensitive. Vinegar and baking soda are your best friends.

Rabbit Puzzles,Enrichment, and Stimulating Toys

Buns need fun! A bored rabbit gets destructive fast. Safe toys and daily playtime make all the difference.
Rabbits are super intelligent creatures and they love to stimulate themselves with toys and anything that could become a bunny chew toy.

⚠️ **Mom Tip:** Change toys often and give your bun floor time daily. A tired bunny = a happy (and less destructive) bunny.

A bored rabbit can be a destructive rabbit. They require mental stimulation and opportunities to practice their natural instincts while living indoors. These are great options to meet their unique needs.
