As a keen hiker and Christchurch local I want to share some of the most popular and picturesque walks for beginners either in or super close to Christchurch.
A short hill walk linking two beaches; Sumner and Taylor’s Mistake
Flowers Track
A coastal walk near Christchurch with huge view pay-offs.
Godley Head Loop Track Carpark
This one is quite steep if you go up the pipeline from Heathcote but you can take the easier switchback route. The walk continues over the hill down into Lyttleton township.
Bridle Path walks and tracks
I like to do sections of the Crater Rim walkway, such as from the top of the Bridal Path to Sign of the Kiwi.
The Crater Rim, Canterbury, New Zealand - Trail Running Directory
Nothing like a refreshing stroll around the gardens! My favourite seasons here are spring (the daffodils are a must-see) and summer and autumn when the roses are in full bloom.
Christchurch Botanic Gardens
An easy route with lovely views
Halswell Quarry walks and tracks
An interesting walk around a regenerating swamp with bird life and viewing platforms.
Travis Walk
Diamond Harbour has some lovely walking tracks starting from the jetty. I like the track to Purau Bay in particular.
Coastal Cliffs Walkway
This walk is mostly flat and affords expansive views of Christchurch. It can be linked with the Crater Rim walkway and you can stop for a drink at the Sign of the Kiwi Cafe. I particularly love it in spring when the blossoms are out. 🫶🏻🌸
Harry Ell Walkway
The Avon River walk goes right through the heart of Christchurch, through the red zone out to New Brighton and is a flat walk suitable for cycling and mostly wheel chair friendly.
Te Ara Otakaro Avon River Trail
A track that takes you from Lyttleton township to smaller bays where you can picnic or swim, including Magazine Bay, Cass Bay and Corsair Bay. Some incline but overall within reach of most able bodied people.
Coastal Path Lyttelton
There are a few ways you can walk to Mt Herbert summit, including from Packhorse Hut and from Diamond Harbour.
