Day 1: Prep
Prep day includes a hair detox, moisturizing shampoo, moisturizing conditioner, hair mask, and leave in. Personally I like to do this all at night, so I can pre stretch my hair without heat. To do that, I section into 4 simple braids.
Every good silk press starts with the prep. Mine starts with a detox shampoo to clean my hair & scalp to make sure I have a good foundation.
10.0 oz Clarifying Detox Shampoo - OUAI | Ulta Beauty
After my detox or clarifying shampoo I follow with a moisturizing shampoo to make sure my hair and scalp are really clean without stripping it too much.
This shampoo is cleansing, but very hydrating. Unlike most shampoos, it’s also very easy to deta...
9.8 oz Hydration Shampoo - PATTERN | Ulta Beauty
I follow up my pattern hydrating shampoo with the matching conditioner.
This works great for the whole family and leaves our hair feeling truly moisturized.
13.0 oz Intensive Conditioner For Curls & Coils - PATTERN | Ulta Beauty
After cleansing I always follow up with a deep conditioner.
This one is incredibly moisturizing, I put it on, cover with a steam cap, and hang out for ~30 min before washing out with cold water.
10.0 oz Moisturizing Deep Conditioner - CÉCRED | Ulta Beauty
I’ve been loving this for growing my edges after one too many slick backs.
Since I prefer to stretch my hair overnight it’s usually almost dry for this stage.
My method here is to lightly dampen with water and a heat protectant and I mean very LIGHT. This cuts down my dry time significantly since the goal is to stretch it...
Absolutely LOVE drying my hair with this round brush. It gets my hair almost straight while minimizing heat.
Since I use this after my hair is pre stretched, sometimes I spray it with water lightly in addition to heat protectant to avoid breakage.
Dyson Airwrap Coanda2x™ multi-styler and dryer
I use this occasionally for drying! It simplifies the process so much and really cuts down the speed. Works great on my daughter’s 4b/4c hair.
I would probably use it more if my hair was shorter.
I use this a lot before blow drying. Love the smell!
44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray - CHI | Ulta Beauty
Sometimes I use this before blow drying.
With the main ingredient being water, I wouldn’t use this before flat ironing.
2.0 oz Blow Dry Miracle H2O Shield Spray - It's A 10 | Ulta Beauty
Day 2: Silk Press
Also day #2, but I separated this because the order of operations here is important for the best results :)
I purchased this after noticing every professional silk press I’ve had is done with this flat iron and I always have amazing results.
Fortunately I get amazing results using it at home too.
1" Lava 1 1/2" Hairstyling Iron - CHI | Ulta Beauty
A heat protector that is not water heavy here is so important because after blow drying you DO NOT want to reintroduce frizz by using water based products.
This protects up to 428 degrees and does not make my hair frizzy or greasy before flat ironi...
