The deal with basil is that it’s basically a teenager that wants to grow tall and gangly. But here’s the trick: when you cut that main stem just above where leaves meet the stem, you’re telling the plant “nah bro, go wide instead of tall.” The plant freaks out (in a good way) and starts pushing energy into all those side shoots. Boom. Bushier plant, more leaves. Now here’s where most people mess up. They let basil flower because it looks pretty. Don’t be that guy. Once basil starts making flowers, it’s basically checking out mentally, putting all its energy into making seeds instead of those tasty leaves you actually want. The leaves get small and bitter, like the plant is giving you attitude. Cut those flower buds off before they even think about blooming. Every time you prune, you’re basically getting a two-for-one deal. Fresh basil for your pasta AND a plant that keeps getting bigger and better. It’s like compound interest but for herbs. Keep doing this and your tiny basil plant turns into this massive, leafy beast that keeps cranking out flavor all season long. Trust me, your future self making pesto will thank you.
