Gear I Packed for the Kaikoura Seal Colony Walk in Canterbury

Purple Star emoji 20 items
Planning a trip to Kaikoura's seal colony walkway and not sure what to bring or where to stop? I showed up my first time in cotton sneakers and no layers, and spent the whole hike cold, slipping on rocks, and squinting into the wind. This is everythi...

Footwear and Layers for the Coastal Walk

The path near Point Kean gets slippery fast, and the Canterbury coast wind hits different than you'd expect in summer. I was shivering in a t-shirt while seals lounged unbothered ten feet away.

Swap out your regular sneakers before you go. The rocks near the seal colony are wet and covered in algae. I nearly ate it twice in my Nikes before I wised up. These grip like they're angry about it.

Wear this as your base layer even if the forecast says warm. Kaikoura's coast will humble you. Merino regulates temperature so you're not soaked in sweat on the uphill and frozen on the exposed bits.

Toss this in your daypack even on clear days. Weather off the Canterbury coast shifts in minutes. I got caught in sideways drizzle with nothing but a hoodie and it was a miserable walk back to the car.

Keep your feet dry and blister-free on the rocky sections. I used to think hiking socks were overkill until I peeled off wet cotton socks in a Kaikoura parking lot. Never again.

Grab one with a chin strap or the Kaikoura wind will send your hat straight into the Pacific. This one stayed put through gusts that had me leaning sideways. Plus the UV protection is no joke down in NZ.

Camera Gear Worth Hauling to Point Kean

You will be closer to wild fur seals than you ever expected. I fumbled with my phone trying to zoom in and every photo came out grainy and useless. A little prep goes a long way here.

Bring something with real zoom if you want seal photos that don't look like blurry gray rocks. This fits in a jacket pocket and the autofocus locks onto moving pups faster than my phone ever could.
Sony RX100 VII Premium Compact Camera with 1.0-type

Use this to keep your camera accessible without it banging around on the rocks. I tried a regular backpack and missed three great shots because I was wrestling with zippers. Quick-access is everything here.

Throw a polarizing filter on if you're shooting near the water. The glare off the rocks and ocean at Kaikoura is brutal midday. Cut through it and your seal colony photos actually show detail instead of white blowout.

Keep one in your sling bag. Between the seal walk, the peninsula lookout, and the drive down the coast, my phone died by 2pm. Nothing worse than finding a baby seal doing something ridiculous with zero battery left.

Clip this to your bag if you're doing the walk near dusk. The path back from the colony isn't well lit once the sun drops behind the hills. Tiny, weighs nothing, saved me from tripping over a rock wall in fading light.

Where to Eat and Refuel in Kaikoura

After two hours on the coastal path watching seals, I was starving and didn't want to waste time finding somewhere decent. Kaikoura is small but a few spots are worth knowing about before you go.

Stop here before or after the seal walk. It's a roadside caravan on the coast highway and the crayfish is absurdly fresh. I've driven past fancier restaurants to come back to this spot three times now.

Sit by the window and order the blue cod. You can literally see the ocean the fish came from. After a cold windy walk along the colony, a hot meal here with that view felt like a reward I actually earned.

Grab a flat white and a scone here on your way to the seal walk. It's right near the Encounter Kaikoura booking office. Good coffee, quick service, and the staff actually know the area if you have questions about the trail.

Try this for dinner if you're staying overnight. The lamb rack was one of the best meals I had in Canterbury. For anyone doing the seal walk plus a whale watch the next morning, this is the kind of dinner that makes the whole trip feel special.

Drive twenty minutes north after the colony walk and pull over when you see the red caravan. Fresh crayfish, ocean views, no frills. I almost skipped it because it looked sketchy from the road. That would have been a huge mistake.

Other Kaikoura Experiences to Pair with the Seal Walk

The seal colony walk takes maybe ninety minutes. That leaves a lot of day to fill, and Kaikoura has more going on than most visitors realize. I crammed too much into one day my first trip and not enough my second.

Book this weeks in advance if you're visiting between December and March. I waited until I arrived and it was sold out for three days straight. Seeing sperm whales surface off the Kaikoura coast is something that sticks with you.

Pair this with the seal colony for a full morning loop. The clifftop views back toward the Seaward Kaikoura Range are wild. Took me about three hours at a relaxed pace, and I spotted more seals along the way than at the main colony.
Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway

Try this if you're comfortable in cold open water. Swimming with wild dusky dolphins off the coast was the most surreal thing I did in New Zealand. Bring your own wetsuit if you run cold because the rentals are hit or miss.

Spend thirty minutes here if you're into weird history. The foundation is literally built on whale bones. It's a short walk from the seal colony and gives you context for why Kaikoura exists as a town at all.

Swing by on your way out of town heading south. It's quiet, smells incredible, and the lavender ice cream caught me off guard with how good it was. Nice contrast after a morning of wind and seals and salt spray.
