I hiked R2R Grand Canyon for my first time May 2025. We had a group of 9 and 5 of them had already done it so they were able to prepare us well. Here’s the gear I used.
I also made a detailed list of tips at kid.outfitter on Instagram :) Check the R2...
These are what I hiked in. I had ran a couple half marathons in Altra running shoes and while they are definitely not the cutest, I think they’re the most comfortable. Make sure you train in the shoes you’ll hike in so they are broken in.
ALTRA Women's Experience Wild 2 Trail Running Shoe
3 out of 5 girls in my group wore these. My sister had hiked the Camino de Santiago in the older model and loved them so she got a bunch of the crew on board with this new version.
Nike Wildhorse 10 Women's Trail Running Shoes
2 of the men in our group wore and loved these :)

I used an old camelbak I had, but I wished I had one with easily accessible pockets like this one has at the bottom. It’s important to keep consuming calories while you’re hiking all day and having pockets on the front makes that possible on the go.
Goodr sunglasses are awesome because they’re lightweight, affordable, comfortable, and polarized.

You’re going to want sun protection. I have thick hair so hats trap the heat and make me extra hot. I know visor’s are dorky, but this one functioned perfectly!
The North Face Summer LT Visor
Obviously you’ll want to wear sunscreen. I love this one for my face. You’re going to reapply a couple times throughout the hike.
CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Tinted
This isn’t a must have, but I wished I had brought a bandana to dip in the river to put around my neck for the hottest parts of the day.
STARWHISPER 22'' Multicolored Cotton Bandana
I only used them on the climb out, but thought they were really helpful to get some of the work from my legs to my arms. My husband used his the entire hike.
Trekology Trek-Z Collapsible Hiking Poles
You’ll want to bring an extra pair of socks to swap half way through. Felt so good to put on a fresh pair at phantom ranch. I wore these in white but they were absolutely filthy. I would wear black or blue next time.
DANISH ENDURANCE Ultra-Comfort Quarter Socks
Bring a separate plastic bottle (body armour or something similar) to refill at the water stations and mix in electrolyte packets. You’ll want to keep your camelbak bladder with just water. Keep sipping both throughout the hike. There are water stati...
These are more salty tasting, but I don’t mind them. Some in our group loved these.
REDMOND Re-Lyte Electrolyte Powder Mix, 30 Pack
These are the ones I brought. I like them and appreciate the clean ingredients, but they take a lot of shaking to mix up.
Lemon Lime Electrolytes
These sample sticks make it easy to take on the go.

We didn’t end up needing it, but in the event that you start or finish in the dark you’re going to need some light.
Blukar LED Headlamp Rechargeable 2000L 8 Modes
You do not want to be hiking with a blister. I brought some moleskin and luckily didn’t need it.
Promifun Moleskin Blister Pads 24 Sheets
A good idea to take some at lunch.
TIME-CAP LABS Timely Ibuprofen 200mg 500 Tabs
Small first aid kit also a good idea to have on hand.
Welly Quick Fix Colorwash First Aid Kit, 2 Pack
These are the leggings I wore. I was glad to have pockets to slip my phone in (no service, just used as a camera) and to tuck in snacks to pull out easily.

We started first thing in the morning (6:00 a.m.) in May 2025 so it was still a bit chilly out, but most of the day I didn’t need a jacket. This was nice and lightweight and I just had it tied around my waist most the day.
