The crucial first step: deciding on a pattern. I'll show you what I'm using, but you can find SO MANY options on Etsy and in other places online.
This is the pattern I'm using for 2026. There are endless options on Etsy (among other places) if this one doesn't speak to you.

The fabric and DMC floss I chose for my project, plus extras for planning colors and handling repeat temperatures. Your pattern will tell you which colors to use, or you can select your own.
I needed a large piece of Aida cloth for this project and ultimately decided to go with a light green as the background for my gardens.

With a large, long-term project, you'll want a way to secure the extra Aida cloth to keep it out of your way. These work SO WELL.

The tools I use to track daily temperatures and match them to the correct floss color.
Whether you decide to track highs, lows or average temperature, Weather Underground gives you the tools you need. It's my go to site for my project for the second year running.

You can use pen and paper to track and log your project. I did last year. This year I'm leaning into technology and using Google Sheets.

How I keep my floss, fabric, and works-in-progress organized throughout the year.
I swear by the cardboard bobbins for my thread. I thought I would prefer the plastic, but these do a far better job of holding the thread in my experience.

These pouches are perfect for organizing projects. The variety in sizes pretty much ensures there's one for every project you're working on. I use one of the smaller bags to hold my scissors, extra bobbins and a pen, tweezers and Thread Magic.
