I got into making greeting cards because they are little pieces of art that you can send to someone else and not have it cluttering up your house. Some supplies are good if you're starting out, others cost more so you may want to wait before buying. I'll tag them all “beginner,” “advanced,” or “all.”
BEGINNER - A die cut machine uses thin metal dies to cut paper into basic or intricate shapes. This machine is small but mighty. I still use it when I'm cutting smaller shapes.
Sizzix Sidekick Starter Kit (White & Gray)
ADVANCED - this larger machine will (obviously) let you cut larger shapes, but also multiple shapes. If you start small, by the time you're ready for this you'll have paper and dies and can buy the machine only. I use this for almost every card I mak...
Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (White & Gray) w/Standard Platform
ALL - This is my favorite black ink to use. It is sharp and juicy on all color paper (except black). It's archival and waterproof which is great if you want to eventually color or paint your stamped designs.
Simon Says Stamp Premium Dye Ink Pad Black Ink008
BEGINNER - Insert your paper and slide the blade from one end to the other to trim. It's very easy to store, and even though I also have the bypass trimmer now, I'll still bring this out for smaller cuts. The sliding blades are replaceable.
Fiskars SureCut 9" Paper Trimmer Transparent/Orange (177560-1001)
ADVANCED - This is your kindergarten teacher's paper cutter. It cuts large sheets of paper easily, and the ‘guillotine’ blade gives you more precise cuts.
Fiskars® 12" Bypass Paper Trimmer
ALL - Yes, you can start with scissors that you have at home but these offer much more precision with much less strain on the hands.
Fiskars Micro-Tip Easy Action Scissors
ALL - Once you've started coloring with alcohol ink, you'll never go back to other markers. The inks blend like a dream, allowing you to blend colors and add shadows. Don't fall into the Copic money pit - these are less expensive and FINE.
Ohuhu DualTip Alcohol Ink Marker Sets
ADVANCED - Worth every penny. Stamps cling to the clear acrylic layer, and the magnet and magnetic base keeps your paper in place so you can stamp multiple times for the best results. The size gives you the ability to stamp multiple elements at once....
MISTI Stamping Tool
BEGINNER - You don't need the fancy stamping tool at first. Clear stamps will stick to these acrylic blocks, and the grid pattern will help you to line up your stamp.
BEGINNER - don't worry about cutting and scoring your own cardstock. I'm advanced-ish and 9 times out of 10 I mount my own card front onto a white prefolded card.
100-Pack White Blank Cards 5.5x8.5 Scored
ADVANCED - Fifty sheets will give you 100 4 ¼ x 5 ½ cards for a little cheaper than the prefolds, but you'll have to do the cutting and scoring. Best if you already have a bypass cutter and scoring tools.
Neenah - Solar White - 8.5 x 11 Cardstock 50 Sheets
ADVANCED - This is the tool that will give you crisp, clean folds if/when you decide to make your own card bases.
Scor-Buddy Mini Scoring Board - Notions Marketing
BEGINNER - You can't go wrong with a birthday stamp and die set. Waffleflower sets are always adorable.
Waffle Flower Crafts - Sweet Birthday Sentiments
ADVANCED - when you see a card in the store where the greeting is raised and glossy, that's embossed. This embossing powder will cling to any color of *pigment ink* and is melted by a heat tool. This powder is clear, so the stamped color will show th...
WOW! Embossing Powder 160ml-Clear Gloss Super Fine
ADVANCED - You can use a heat tool to melt embossing powder, be careful because they get very hot very quickly.
Ranger Heat It Craft Tool - Black
ADVANCED - This is clear, sticky embossing ink. For this you'll want to use a colored embossing powder. Or even a metallic!
Ranger Emboss It Clear Ink Pad
ADVANCED - She's rose gold and she's gorgeous. This would be used with embossing ink. Also, the finer the powder, the better your daintier stamps will look.
Ranger Ink Rose Gold Metallic Embossing Powder
ADVANCED - you can also emboss by putting your paper in an embossing folder and running it through a die cut machine to smoosh the pattern into the paper. Creating dimension raises your cards to the next level.
