2024 has been one of the best years for music that I have ever experienced, and here are 15 songs (outside of NOT LIKE US by Kendrick Lamar) that deserve a seat at the table.
Collide by Preston Alexander was his debut single, and after clearly taking inspiration from acts like Dominic Fike, he stuck the landing with possibly the best debut of the year.
Collide
Royel Otis' cover of Murder on the Dancefloor was timeless the moment it dropped. One of the best covers I've heard, and one of the best songs of the year hands down.
Murder on the Dance Floor
Matt Champion and Dijon combine for one of the smoothest tracks to date, and it notably brought both of them out of short hiatuses.
Aphid
Sunday (1994) resides in the lane of a Mazzy Star esque character, and this track is at the top of their discography so far for me.
TV Car Chase
Tommy Richman has had a year to remember, and this song might just be the best of the lot. Smooth, 80's inspired, and already timeless.
DEVIL IS A LIE
Mt. Joy has become one of my favorite bands over the last year, and this song is already near the top of my favorites of ALL TIME.
Bathroom Light - Live from Red Rocks
Dominic Fike dropped a project of incomplete songs, and managed to make one of the best of the year in that process. One of the greatest of all time, but that's for a future list…
misses
Pigeons & Planes released a compilation album highlighting up and comers, and this track is the pick of the lot for myself and many others.
Dope Sick
This song pays homage to the lead character of Spirited Away, and has some of the smoothest production I have ever heard.
CHIHIRO
SiR and Anderson combining led to one of the most suave singles in the rap genre that I've heard in years.
POETRY IN MOTION
Hozier makes hits. Simple as that.
Too Sweet
Burnt Away was Liam's second song of the year, and it may just be the one that put him on the map for many.
Burnt Away
This was the song that introduced MM to the world, and is a folk masterclass that led him to open for the Lumineers.
Scared To Start
RMCM is a break out band from the past few years, and this song follows on their aleady strong path from songs like Evergreen.
Sierra Vista
I don't listen to a ton of hispanic music, but Young Miko has single handedly changed that. There is so much swagger in each word and production note, and is one of my favorites of the year so far.
