Want to spend a day or two in Chicago like a local? Here are my fav things to do, see, and eat. Sure some are tourist things too—but they’re also just some of the great things about the city that Chicagoans happen to enjoy as well!
Map
In the summer, there’s no easier or more scenic way to get to this iconic neighborhood. The drop off takes you right to a beautiful park and you’re just a few short blocks from the shops and restaurants.
Chicago River Taxi to Chinatown
This park is vast and beautiful! Grab food from one of the locals with a food cart, or bring a picnic. In the summer the beach is open, and you can rent a swan float and pedal around. Or just stroll the miles of paths.
Humboldt (Alexander Von) Park
Skip the S-bucks roastery on Michigan and go here instead. Palestinian coffee and pastries!
OUD Coffee & Cafe River North
Head to Andersonville for the best pastries in Chicago.
Lost Larson (Andersonville)
Local artist booths with clothes, candles, art, and more!
Andersonville Galleria
Ok this is NOT in Chicago don’t come at me. But this is absolutely worth heading north for. The gardens and building are absolutely incredible.
Bahá'í House of Worship
Bowling alley from the 40’s with a vintage lounge.
Fireside Bowl
There’s no better way to spend a cold winter day than here. You’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip to the tropics. Beautiful indoor botanical garden is a great way to spend an hour or two.
Garfield Park Conservatory
It’s on every list for a reason. As a local, I do this annually.
Wendella Tours & Cruises
Super nice little park with a great view of the city.
Palmisano (Henry) Park
Great collection!
National Museum of Mexican Art
Stunning Japanese Garden.
Garden of the Phoenix
Classic old cocktail lounge that was an Al Capone hang. The city tunnels still run under it.
Green Mill
The oldest African American Museum in the country. Really educational exhibits for adults and kids.
DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center
This is super cool if you’re into bodies, surgery, or things a little in the oddities category at all.
