I got into sourdough a few years ago and was so overwhelmed at first. It can seem so complicated and feel like you need to buy a million things just to start. This list contains my tried and true items! I personally think anything else is extra, but ...
I did a lot of research on what type of dutch oven to get, and I'm so happy with this choice! I've also cooked things like meat and soups in it, and it works wonders.
Mueller 6 Quart Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven
I love this sourdough kit; this is the one I have. It really has the majority of what you need.
Sourdough Set
I have this food scale, and I love it! I have tried to make sourdough without using a scale, and it has never turned out as good as when I use one.
Food Scale
I like using these jars to hold my sourdough, and I like to use the extra jars for holding discard. I prefer a wide-mouth jar because it's easier to manage the starter when mixing, scraping, etc.
Wide Mouth Mason Jars
I have to say this King Arthur Bread Flour really is the best. You can use regular flour, but I get much better results with this bread flour.
King Arthur 100% Organic Bread Flour
Okay - I never thought this was necessary …but now I think it is. It makes cutting your sourdough significantly easier, and you get nice, even slices every time. I think it's worth it!
Bread Knife
I've gotten into scoring my bread, and this makes it so much easier and therefore more fun.
Bread Lame Sourdough Scoring Tool
Sourdough can get messy, which is part of the fun. However, I do enjoy having a mat that I can use to protect my counter to make clean-up easier.
Non-slip Silicone Pastry Mat
This is something I would never have thought of, but I use a food thermometer all the time when cooking bread. It lets you know when the bread is done, so you don't over/undercook because sometimes it's hard to tell from the exterior.
Digital Food Thermometer
This is another great tool to help make the process a bit easier when transferring your sourdough.
Silicone Bread Sling
I have had these bowls for YEARS and love them so much. They are more of an investment, but I think they are worth it. They are non-slip on the bottom, easy to clean, and the metal interior has held up perfectly over time.
OXO Good Grips 3-Piece Stainless Steel Bowls
I'm a big fan of silicone oven mitts. I have these, and they're great. The oven temperature for sourdough baking can get quite high, so I think it's important to have a nice pair!
Silicone Oven Mitts
This is a great tool for mixing. This pairs well with the wide-mouth jars so you can really reach the bottom.
Skinny Spurtle for Sourdough Starter
This was another thing I didn't think was necessary, but now that I have it, I use it all the time. I love using this instead of getting big chunks of flour everywhere.
Flour Duster
As I mentioned, you'll be working with a high-heat oven. It's nice to have a trivet for your hot dutch oven!
