The pipes running through my basement ceiling had zero protection. Every cold morning I'd hold my breath waiting for water to flow. These foam sleeves took ten minutes to install and I stopped worrying overnight.

Insulation alone wasn't enough for the pipes in my detached garage. Temperatures hit single digits and foam couldn't keep up. Adding heat cable underneath the insulation was what finally solved it.

Gaps between foam sections are where cold air sneaks in. I thought I was done after snapping on insulation, then found frost forming right at every seam. Wrapping tape over the joints fixed that immediately.

I forgot to cover my outdoor spigot one year and the pipe behind it cracked inside the wall. Water damage showed up in the living room weeks later. Now I cover every exterior faucet before Halloween, no exceptions.

Half my plumbing runs through a vented crawl space that might as well be outdoors in January. I spent a full Saturday sealing and insulating down there. Uncomfortable work but it paid for itself the first cold snap.

Even with insulation, I wanted a warning system. Finding out your pipe burst because there's water on the floor is too late. These sensors alert your phone before a small problem turns into a renovation project.

No matter how much you prep, something can still go wrong. Last January my neighbor's pipe burst at a fitting and she had no idea what to do until the plumber arrived. Having a few emergency supplies saved her floors.
