I booked three different whale watching tours during my trip because I was paranoid about missing out. Two were incredible, one was a waste. Here's what worked and what I'd rebook in a heartbeat.

My first morning on the boat I was soaked, squinting, and freezing. By day three I had it figured out. These are the things I wish someone had told me to bring before I left home.

Whale watching was the main event but I had free afternoons and wanted more water time. Some of these surprised me more than the whales did, honestly.

Every whale watching tour dumps you back at the marina around lunchtime, starving and wind-beaten. I ate my way through Ponta Delgada and these are the spots I kept going back to.

You can't whale watch every single day without burning out or going broke. These filled my off-days and honestly gave the whales some competition for best memory of the trip.

Nobody told me half of this stuff before I went. I figured it out through mistakes, awkward moments, and one very cold morning on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic.
