You cannot visit Obidos without sipping ginja from a chocolate cup on a narrow street. But some bottles are worth bringing home and others taste like cough syrup. I tried way too many before narrowing it down.

My first afternoon in Obidos I wore flat sandals and could barely walk by dinner. The streets are gorgeous but brutal on your feet. These saved my second and third days completely.

Nobody warned me that the whitewashed walls in Obidos reflect sunlight from every direction. I got sunburned on the underside of my chin. Seriously. These kept me from repeating that mistake.

Every single angle in Obidos looks like a postcard. I burned through my phone battery by noon because I could not stop shooting. Bringing dedicated gear made a huge difference on day two.

Obidos is about an hour from Lisbon by car or bus. I overpacked the first day and underpacked the second. Third time I finally figured out the perfect day bag setup.

Most restaurants near the main gate are tourist traps with laminated menus. I wasted one lunch on overpriced mediocre food before locals pointed me to the spots they actually go to.

Skip the mass-produced fridge magnets. Obidos has actual artisans making things by hand inside the walls. I brought back a few pieces that still sit on my shelf and remind me of that trip every morning.
