This is a great beginner holder because you have the choice between using the holder as a straight or oblique pen. It even has a nib storage when you unscrew the pen.

Without a holder, a calligraphy nib is useless. I recommend a holder that has a nice big bulge in the middle for an ergonomic hold. I also love an oblique holder because it helps create that slant you need in many calligraphy scripts.

To keep my pads fresh so that I can keep reusing them, I love using a light pad and paper to trace over my calligraphy pads. I love being able to essentially practice infinitely with my calligraphy literature.

When looking for paper, you want it to be acid-free and have a good weight to hold the ink as you write. I like to keep a ream or 2 of this paper for practice and drafting pieces.

Back to the basics. For me, having my cursive script down greatly helped me doing calligraphy. Cursive and calligraphy strokes are basically the same except for pressure. I like to do cursive as a warm-up before doing any calligraphy.
