these are my favourite books – if you want to be in an unofficial book club with me, pick up any of these. always happy to chat about them!
this is absolutely one of my favourite stories in the world – tragic, magic realism, and beautifully crafted in a way where it feels like you're reading a dream.
The seas
this is a beautiful book about loving an addict. this book truly resonated with me and is a wonderfully human story.
I Could Live Here Forever: A Novel
i love this book. it's short and poignant as one woman chronicles her journey during the end of the world.
The End We Start From
a collection of essays from an alternative girl trying her best to navigate love and life. these essays felt so authentic and made me feel less alone.
Tonight I'm Someone Else: Essays
genuinely this book is dark and wickedly funny, emotional, and gives a great commentary on racial identity and politics. i truly could not put this book down once i opened it.
Yellowface
the imagery in this book, and it's message of sisterhood, truly was something to behold. i love this book and the author is a genius.
My Sister, the Serial Killer
a collection of short stories for the macabre little goth in your life.
Things to Do When You're Goth in the Country
this is the little goth girl's foundational literature. if you haven't fantasized about running through a field on a foggy day, calling for heathcliff, then you haven't really lived.
Wuthering Heights
i want to see rachel setton take on an adaptation of this. funny, quick, anxiety inducing – this is the best.
Hysteria
this is one of the most moving books about life i have ever read. also has a bit of mystery and macabre vibe that add so much to the story.
Neverworld Wake
this collection of essays is one of my faves because it's so brutally honest – i'm not usually a fan of broeder's fiction, but her essays are really where she shines.
So Sad Today: Personal Essays
art lovers celebrate – this is a beautiful piece of historical fiction dissects a moment in time and it's rippling effects on those impacted. pittard has a way with words and genuinely moved me to tears.
Visible Empire: A Novel
this is one of the most raw and human stories i have ever read. i think this book is absolutely perfect.
The Story of a Marriage
after the pandemic, this book became hauntingly beautiful. isolation, a pandemic, and chaos – this book has it all and makes you feel both seen and less alone.
The Dreamers
the structure of this book is everything – all very stream of consciousness, everything told from alternating perspectives as a firsthand account – this movie reads like confessional tapes. and i love it.
The Incendiaries
you can never go wrong with joan didion – i love her work, and these are some of her best.
South and West
joan's on here twice because she's just that good. i feel these are her most emotional essays, and i think it brings you closer to the mystery.
