I read aloud every night to our kids, ranging from eleven to seven years old and, unfortunately, we’ve read a few duds. 😬😆 Here are a few books that you can actually look forward to reading with your kiddos that can cross a wide age range!
This is a great Christmas time read. A year and a half later and my daughter still calls herself “Panda-Lainey” anytime she wears her panda jammies.
The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street (Book 1)

Short chapters and a few pictures make this a great intro chapter book read aloud for the little ones. Plus a robot voice is pretty fun to do… 😆
The Wild Robot (Volume 1) (The Wild ...
This book still holds up! (And if you cried when you read it as a child, you’ll probably cry again…)
Charlotte's Web: A Newbery Honor Award Winner
I was NOT expecting to like this book, but it was so sweet and I truly did not see the plot twist coming at the end!
All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor
You probably remember reading “Sarah, Plain and Tall,” but the entire series is great! The books are short reads and my kids loved watching the mini series after we read the books.
Sarah, Plain and Tall Saga 5-Book Series
If silly’s not your thing, skip this one, but you’ll miss out on a short book with short chapters, each featuring a different student from Wayside School. It’s a fun one if you like doing voices and you want your littles laughing!
Sideways Stories from Wayside School - Books
I picked this series up because I have a Henry. Thankfully he’s not horrid, but he does LOVE this series. I read it aloud to him and inevitably all the other kids come join in to listen. Each book has four short stories, making it a perfect read alou...
All the Horrid Henry Books in Order
Poetry gets a bad rap, but start them young and with some great poems and your kids will soon learn to love it! The beauty of reading poetry as a read aloud is that you can read as many or as few as you have the time (and patience) for!
Where the Sidewalk Ends - Shel Silverstein
Reading graphic novels together is a great way to build confidence in read “big” books, especially for your littles and your reluctant readers! Plus, this book inspired many cardboard projects out of my kids after we read it.
The Cardboard Kingdom
Your kids are not too old for this book. YOU are not too old for this book! Reading the original Winnie the Pooh stories is a salve for the soul. They are funny, interesting, and a perfect thought before drifting into dreams.
The Complete Tales of Winnie-The-Pooh
This was a BEAUTIFUL book, both the writing and the illustrations. My son actually picked it out from the library and it was a perfect read aloud. There’s even a Netflix show to watch once you finished the book!
Ollie's Odyssey - William Joyce Books
A silly, good time read. Perfect for a light story before bed. It also has a movie to follow up with once you’re done!
Mr. Popper's Penguins (Newbery Honor Book)
This has been so fun to read aloud. I honestly can’t wait to see what happens next each night! *some of the creatures are a little spooky and there was one creepy scene that had my seven year old pretty wide eyed, but he was invested and it didn’t bo...
