I have been choosing my next read the wrong way my entire life, so I'm trying something different this time. No synopsis. No reviews. Just the first line. If it doesn't grab me in one sentence, we're not doing this.
"Everybody lies and everybody dies."
you come home from a run. your key doesn't fit. a woman who looks like you answers the door. and your husband says — she's his wife. i need you to read this book so i can talk about the ending with someone.

How far would you go to rescue your child?
Caller Unknown: A Novel by Gillian McAllister, Paperback
"Cora's mother always used to say children were whipped up by the wind, that even the quiet ones would come in after playtime made wild by it."
gut reaction: poetic. nostalgic. and somehow already dreadful. 🖤
The Names (A Read with Jenna Pick) by Florence Knapp, Hardcover
"I open the water tap out of habit. Nothing."
gut reaction: two sentences. and i already feel the weight of an entire war.
As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh, Paperback
"A hand on my shoulder shook me awake."
gut reaction: soft. quiet. already feels like something is about to be lost.

Beautiful Ugly is her best one yet. the atmosphere pulled me in completely. the mystery kept me there. the characters made me care more than i expected. the pacing made me cancel plans. pause card i was ready to call it my book of the year. then i go...
it didn't ruin the book. but it took something from it. she built something so grounded and unsettling and then the ending went somewhere i just couldn't follow her.

Out of the book slump!
i was in a reading slump for weeks. The Poppy War ended it in one sitting. and then it put me in an emotional slump instead. so.
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang is a fantasy novel inspired by modern Chinese history — specifically the Second Sino-Japanese War. it starts like a dark academia book. a poor girl studies obsessively to pass an exam and escape her village. she gets into ...
the first half of this book feels like one story. the second half feels like a completely different author sat down, looked at everything you loved, and decided none of it was safe. the war chapters are brutal. historically brutal. Kuang does not loo...
the main character is Rin. and i need you to understand that she is not a hero. she is angry and desperate and brilliant and she makes choices that will sit in your chest long after you close the book.
and then there's Nezha. i'm not going to tell you what happens. but i will tell you that the ending recontextualizes an entire relationship in a way that made me put the book down and just... sit with it.
this book is for you if you've been in a reading slump and need something that grabs you by the collar
The Poppy War Series | Barnes & Noble®
what if someone rated human experience out of five stars? not hotels. not restaurants. sunsets. diet dr pepper. the plague.
The Anthropocene Reviewed is a collection of essays by John Green. each one takes something from the human-centered planet — a sound, a disease, a song, a moment — and reviews it. formally. with a star rating at the end.
there's an essay about Halley's Comet. one about scratch and sniff stickers. one about the first picture ever taken of a human being. and somehow every single one of them ends up being about the same thing.
i did not expect this book to make me think about being alive differently. i expected something clever and a little pretentious and enjoyable enough. what i got was a book that kept stopping me mid-essay to just — look up. look around. exist for a se...
The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet
there are books you finish. and there are books that finish you. A Thousand Splendid Suns is the second kind.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini follows two women in Afghanistan across three decades of war, loss, and survival. Mariam. Laila. Two lives that were never supposed to intersect. and then they do. and nothing is ever the same after.
Mariam is introduced as someone the world has already decided doesn't matter. illegitimate daughter. unwanted wife. invisible woman. Hosseini spends the entire book quietly, devastatingly proving the world wrong.
Laila is everything Mariam wasn't allowed to be. loved. educated. full of future. and then the war takes it. piece by piece. methodically. without apology. reading Laila felt like watching something bright get slowly extinguished and being completely...
but here's the thing - this book isn't really about what they lose. it's about what two women build for each other inside of impossible circumstances — without permission, without safety, without any guarantee it will last.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Paperback
i don't know how to explain what it feels like to finish East of Eden. it's like putting down something very heavy that you didn't realize you were carrying. and then immediately missing the weight.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck is a multigenerational saga set in the Salinas Valley in California. two families. decades of history. good and evil examined so closely you start to question everything you thought you knew about both.
this book contains entire human lifetimes. it contains landscapes that feel like characters. it contains a biblical retelling so quietly embedded in a California ranch story that you don't notice it until it's already inside you.
the most important thing about being human is that you get to choose. not that you will choose right. just that the choice is yours.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Paperback | Barnes & Noble®
Natalie — the main character of Yesteryear — is many things. but she is never, not once, not for a single second, not performing. And somehow she's the most unlikeable AND the most relatable character I've ever read.
