I bought three different chalkboard signs before finding ones that actually photograph well and don't smudge the second my kid touches them. These are the keepers that survived four back-to-school seasons so far.

Regular chalk looked washed out in every single photo I took. Switching to liquid chalk markers was the fix I didn't know I needed, and now the text pops even when I'm shooting against bright morning light.

Our front door is an ugly beige that photographs like a doctor's office wall. Adding a simple backdrop or positioning trick made the photos look like we hired someone.

A sign alone can feel stiff. Adding one or two small props gave my kids something to do with their hands and made the photos feel real instead of forced.

I had four years of first day photos buried in my camera roll before I finally started printing and displaying them. Seeing the lineup on the wall is the whole payoff of doing this every year.
