The sharp stone ledge around our fireplace was the single scariest thing in the house once our daughter started pulling herself up. One forehead-meets-granite moment was all it took for me to order these that same night.

Once I baby-proofed the hearth, I suddenly noticed every other sharp corner in the room. Coffee table, TV stand, end tables — our living room was basically an obstacle course.

Some days the cushion guard wasn't enough because my son wanted to climb INTO the fireplace. A physical barrier became non-negotiable real fast.

Hard tile around our fireplace meant every tumble was brutal. Covering the floor with play mats turned the danger zone into the safest spot in the house.

Hot glass and metal grates are a burn waiting to happen. After our pediatrician mentioned how common fireplace burns are in crawlers, I added a screen barrier the same week.

Baby-proofing the hearth made me realize the cabinets next to it were full of fire starters and matches. One unlocked cabinet is all it takes for a really bad day.

Our fireplace wall has four outlets at crawling height because whoever built this house clearly didn't have kids. Covering them was a five-minute fix I wish I'd done on day one.

When my daughter pulled herself up using the bookshelf next to the fireplace, the whole thing wobbled. That was the wake-up call that heavy furniture needs to be anchored to the wall.

Our baby kept wiping out on the rug near the fireplace because it slid on the hardwood like a magic carpet. A non-slip solution turned the rug from a hazard into actual protection.

Even after baby-proofing everything, I still wanted eyes on the fireplace area when I stepped into the kitchen. A good monitor turned my anxiety from a 9 to about a 3.
