Here are some of my favorite hiking spots in Northern Virginia and nearby areas, including Shenandoah National Park. Each recommendation includes the distance from Washington, D.C., what you need to get there, and what I loved about the trail!
Distance from DC: ~2 hours
What to bring: Sturdy hiking boots, water, and a daypack
A challenging 9.5-mile loop featuring rock scrambles and panoramic views. It's one of Shenandoah's most popular hikes, so start early to avoid crowds.
Old Rag Mountain
Distance from DC: ~2 hours
An easy 1.6-mile loop offering stunning vistas of the Shenandoah Valley. Ideal for families and those seeking a shorter hike.
Stony Man (U.S. National Park Service)
Distance from DC: ~2 hours
A 1.6-mile round trip leading to a beautiful waterfall. The trail is steep but short, making it a popular choice for a quick nature escape.
Dark Hollow Falls
Distance from DC: ~2 hours
At 4,050 feet, it's the highest point in Shenandoah. The 2.9-mile loop offers breathtaking 360-degree views.
You'll definitely feel the elevation (be ready lol) but the views are worth it!
Hawksbill Summit
Distance from DC: ~2 hours
A moderate 3.7-mile hike with rewarding views of the valley below. There are multiple trailheads, offering options for different skill levels.
