The walk from the trailhead to the monkey park is about 30 minutes through snow and ice. I watched two people slip and one guy's phone screen crack on impact. These kept me upright and functional.

The monkeys are surprisingly chill around humans, but the lighting is tricky. Steam from the hot spring, flat gray skies, and wet conditions made my first batch of photos look terrible. Second day I came prepared.

Most people day-trip from Nagano city, but staying nearby means you can hit the park at opening when it's quiet and the light is best. I tried both approaches and sleeping close to the park was infinitely better.

I almost made the mistake of just eating convenience store onigiri the whole trip. Nagano's food scene is low-key incredible, especially the soba. Missing these would have been a genuine loss.

Jigokudani is worth the trip on its own, but Nagano has more going on than most people realize. I added a couple of these and it turned a two-day monkey trip into a five-day highlight of my whole Japan itinerary.

Nobody warns you about the small logistical things that can mess up your Jigokudani trip. These aren't exciting purchases but every single one saved me real frustration.
